We recently connected with Damon Overton and have shared our conversation below.
Damon , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client I met here in Dallas was Carter Sims, a rising talent that collegiate coaches need to keep their eye on. We started training back in 2020, and he is now in High School playing Varsity as a sophomore for the Mabank Panthers. It’s a great feeling to earn money for doing what I love, but it is an even greater feeling when my clients are successful on the court with the training that I provide for them. After a few months I had parents telling me I should start my own program and now we are here today as we have over 50+ clients (MS & HS), 2 collegiate, and 1 pro athlete’s
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up, I spent almost every day at the park working on my game, whether it was by myself or with my friends/teammates. I started to fall in love with the game of basketball at a very young age, but throughout high school and college, I never thought about coaching basketball or becoming a skill development coach after my playing days because I always had aspirations of playing pro ball.
Growing up in the late ’90s and ’00s, I didn’t have much guidance when it came to sharpening my skill set outside of organized basketball. It wasn’t until I met a very good friend of mine, Kannon Burrage, who I looked up to and who spent time with me at the park working on basic skill work and learning how to play the game the right way. Kannon Burrage, who is now the Head Coach at Black Hawk College, was the most skilled player I watched on the basketball court, so learning from him was a significant advantage for me. Two other mentors of mine, Coach Polite (Head Coach of the Rock Island Rocks) and Coach Pickens (Head Coach for Lawrence Tech University), really played a big part in educating and coaching me to perform at a high level.
The three of them really motivated me to become a coach and work for the basketball community. The idea came from my brother, Jordan Flowers, who was also a fellow teammate of mine and played a big role in getting this business off the ground and discovering the program name NoLimit Basketball. After my senior year, I decided to take on a Graduate Assistant position at Midland University, where I was an assistant coach for the Men’s Basketball team and the Head coach for the JV team. Coaching alongside my Head Coach, Oliver Drake, and Assistant Coach, Cam Schuknecht, taught me how to be a professional when it came to coaching. During my time at Midland, I really started to love the skill development sessions with our athletes. Not only did I challenge the players, but the players also challenged me, and this helped me become a better coach over the years.
My team and I have also decided to expand. We are in Milwaukee, WI, run by Coach Diamontae McKinley and Duane Wilson. We recently expanded to Houston, TX, run by Coach Jordan Flowers. We will all continue to grow our programs and give back to the basketball community, keeping them up to speed with the pace of the game. We decided to partner up with Antwan Brooks and his LBG (Let’s Be Great) movement as we want to move in a direction where we can serve our communities and spread the word of God. We are excited about what is to come next as we continue to grow as a team!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on Social media has been a challenge, but my team and I are starting to figure things out. The most important thing to do when building your social is to be consistent with contents, and exposure for our clients. We are still building our IG, ad Facebook and we are currently in the process of creating a website for our clients so they can have a smooth process joining our program.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Using Instagram has been a big help when it comes to growing my clientele. Over the 2023 summer I ran Ads to attracted those who don’t know me or the program. Another way I grow clientele is recruiting. I have been traveling all over to watch the top DFW Athletes in the area. There are plenty of ways to build clientele, but I am having success doing what I think
