We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Damon Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Damon below.
Damon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The majority of people in society never get to live out a dream of theirs because they are afraid to take risks. You have to believe in yourself and your God given abilities no matter what. During the height of the pandemic I had lost my job and had no idea what I would do at that point. I had been smoking cigars for a few years and learning about the tobacco industry with an interest of participating in it someday. In 2020 I was introduced to Alex Spencer (owner of Alex Spencer Reserve). I bought a box of his “Mansa” cigars, which is the flagship product of the company. As soon as I enjoyed my first one I knew that this was a treasure that the world of cigar enthusiasts needed to have. I did not instantaneously have the answer of how I would make this happen, but I had no doubts of the possibility. Together Alex Spencer and I put everything on the line to get products to as many retailers as possible. Today the Mansa is selling across the country and abroad and is highly sought after. Our success thus far has been due to our non fear of risk taking.

Damon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the Creative Marketing Strategist for Alex Spencer Reserve.(ASR). We are a cigar company based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The tobacco industry has many nuances and can be complex. Many people get their foot in the door, but actually getting in the building and given true access is the key. In order to do this I had to prove that I could truly speak to the product at hand in almost a scientific like manner. I had to prove that I could create ideas that would appeal to those already interested in cigars and possibly draw in new consumers. Most importantly I had to show that I have the ability to get major retail locations to put us on their shelves. Interaction with our followers has been a major factor in our success. When our supporters say they want our cigars in their city we find a way to make it happen. ASR prides itself in presentation, quality, and creativity. Our company strives to bring the world into a history lesson.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
In order to manage a team and maintain high morale in business you have to control your ego. Do not get rid of it, just control it. There should always be a system of checks and balances, both within numbers and on a social aspect. A great employer holds themselves accountable and should expect the same from employees. When each party is susceptible to criticism and willing to make changes for a greater outcome, you have the ingredients for success.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency and positive interactions with people have helped Alex Spencer Reserve build a reputation in our market. When we are called upon for events we make it priority. When a company wants a meeting it is priority. The most important priority is the consumer. Always speak with your clientele with respect and appreciation for their support.
