We were lucky to catch up with Damion Hing recently and have shared our conversation below.

Damion, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?

As a photographer and editor who focuses mainly on Cosplay, it takes three steps to be successful in the craft. These are Knowledge, Communication, and Collaboration. Knowledge of the source material will help you capture the essence of each character and ensure your photos align with the cosplay community’s expectations. Paying close attention to costume accuracy and the finer details of Cosplay, as these are important to both cosplayers and their fans. Communication and Collaboration are based on building relationships and networking with cosplayers, costume designers, and event organizers, which can help you access a pool of potential clients and collaborations. Treat everyone respectfully, maintain professionalism, and gain a reputation for reliability and quality work.

I have a great story about this view and how it benefited everyone involved to provide a memorable experience. During my early days as a photographer, I met a very respected cosplayer in the community; they worked very hard on their craft and kept adding different techniques to push themselves to the next level. Understanding first the hard work and dedication this individual had taken to pour into their creation allowed me to see the characters and source material that cosplayers brought to life. This allowed me to forge a connection by asking questions and engaging on a level of Respect, Empathy, and Appreciation. This approach reassured the Cosplayer that the focus of my work is to reflect their work while sharing with our community. This led to a productive and enjoyable collaboration; some of the most stunning cosplay photography and editing results emerged from the fusion of our creative minds. My job was to keep everything the same but to add to an already successful blueprint of their hard work, further capturing their creativity with stunning results. This also ultimately led to a great friendship. Remember, working together is better when interests align for each other and not for yourself.

Hello, I’m Damion Hing, also known as Hing Photography, and I’m thrilled to introduce myself and what I do. I have a deep passion for photography and editing, which I genuinely enjoy. I got into this craft through my genuine love and appreciation for capturing the hard work of others and their memorable moments. This first started by witnessing the immense dedication and time a Cosplayer had taken to obtain the outcome of their desired source material and partnering with them to share their memorable experience with our community.

In my journey, I’ve had the privilege of offering a range of creative works to capture moments that tell captivating stories. My main focus is Cosplay Photography and Editing. I take immense pride in being able to provide value and a personal touch to every project and opportunity. Focusing on the Cosplay’s details, joy, and desired outcomes. My desire is to create a partnership and share in the memorable experience that was made possible by the hard work of others. I feel the most significant problem this solves is the creative freedom it provides. Since my focus is mainly Cosplay, I am partnering with already creative and focused minds. They are the ones who have put in the hard work and achieved the desired outcome. Within the Cosplay and Photography Community, I believe Trustworthiness, Honesty, and Integrity have allowed me to obtain and build a positive and lasting reputation. Building trust is paramount in the cosplay and photography communities. Cosplayers and clients must trust your skills, professionalism, and commitment to delivering on promises. Trust is crucial; transparency in your dealings, whether about pricing, the creative process, or any potential challenges, helps build trust. Open and honest communication fosters a sense of reliability. Being truthful and forthright in your interactions with clients and cosplayers also builds a strong foundation of trust. Honesty about your abilities, capabilities, and any limitations is vital. Upholding a strong sense of integrity in your work means doing what’s right, even when no one is watching. Trust, honesty, and integrity go hand in hand, and they are the cornerstones of my reputation as a cosplay photographer. As I earn the trust of the cosplay community through these values, I not only build a strong reputation but also establish myself as a trustworthy and respected professional in this field.
