We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Damien James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Damien below.
Hi Damien, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Well this is an interesting one for me Because I really did start down my path as a creative really early in life by the time I was 13 or 14 years old I was in orphanages and foster care so I would use writing songs as a way to escape my reality and I got really good really fast at the recording part But I felt like I was too young and delusional to really understand what I should be doing from a business perspective and really had no mentors ahead of me to tell me to use the very beginning stages of the Internet to kinda get myself out there I know I would’ve been at least sign to some label or something but now That used to really bother me but now I subscribe to the belief that you are right where you are supposed to be in life and I had to learn a lot of stuff and grow as a musician in order for my experience to shape out the way it needs to
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Born and Raised in Phoenix Arizona I have always beat the odds a lot of my childhood was spent navigating through group homes and foster homes as a kid. A lot of the stuff happening at that time was very traumatic so I started writing music to escape.I bounced around Arizona honing my skill and got to a point to where i started recording at 13 years old. I do music because its my passion and to show people no matter your background you can bring yourself to the fore front and follow whatever dreams you may have. Having to have a Chiari Malformation Brain Surgery on top of the traumatic life experiences I have lived through give me a unique perspective in my music and just in life. I am most proud of my album “Better Luck Next Time” hit as high as number three in the world on the iTunes pre-order charts for hip-hop and I just want everyone to know i’m here to inspire and motivate.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes I want to be able to make a living doing what I love. I also love the idea of being able to influence people and directly touch peoples lives. I started doing music because i figured it’s what I want and its the quickest way to buy my mother a house, that is the goal.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yeah I wish i knew more about influencers the ability to get on a bigger platform in the same niche is everything for me. I also wish I wouldn’t have associated spending money to promote my heart as something negative its a huge set back and most people in this industry do it.
