Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Damian Hendrix. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Damian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
One of the craziest experiences that I went through as I was growing my business was the balancing of my full-time job at the time and my business. I remember calling out for a 12hr shift for a $50 photoshoot. I was making about $25/hr at the time and I remember telling myself that one day it would all pay off. I knew that it meant more to me to earn the $50 under my business name and not the $300 from working for a company.
Damian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been exposed to photography and videography all of my life. My dad was one of the pioneers in the 80’s that walked around with a camera and documented everyday life on video. I’d like to say that a lot of my passion was for the art was planted by my father. I remember he bought a video store out and we had an endless amount of movies of all genres at our disposal. I think I was about 9/10 at the time.
I started in the production field officially after high school ( Class of 2006), landing a job at Sinclair Broadcast Group – Fox45 News (2007-2009). I started out as an intern and within two months, I was offered a position in the production department. I remember starting out preparing scripts for the on-air talent and operating the teleprompter. After a while, I continued to utilize the opportunity to learn as much as possible from the other professionals there including editing, photography, set design, and many other tasks. I stayed there for a few years and ultimately became one of the studio floor directors before leaving.
After functioning as an Emergency Medical Technician in Maryland since 2005 and also working at University of Maryland Medical Center – Shock Trauma Center, I decided that my 15 years in the medical field was slowly fading to one of my least favorite things to do. I really dived into the craft in 2016 and by 2019, I left my daytime job and became a full-time entrepreneur.
After running my business for six years officially, I am proud of the lessons and accomplishments that I have made so far and I am excited to see what the future holds. My ultimate goal is to create my first full-feature film and open a production warehouse for small and big production companies from all over the world.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding my business initially was quite the journey. I remember saving for months to buy my first camera. Although it was only a $500 investment. That investment was the start of something special, I can actually remember walking to Best Buy to buy my first piece of equipment.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I do believe that word of mouth is the best source of new clients for me because they are referred by authentic and genuine clients that I have worked with before in the past. I have a very unorthodox approach when it comes to marketing as I don’t really try to drawn in too many new clients at once because I hate turning down new clients due to limited availability. Although I do have a great team of creatives that work alongside of me at times, sometimes it can be possible to spread yourself thin and become burned out. However I do encourage any and everyone who may be interested in utilizing our services to please contact us. Quality and Customer Service are the two pivotal points in structure of our company.
