We were lucky to catch up with Damian Avila Munoz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Damian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea has always been in the back of my mind. I was hesitant at first, but one of my colleagues (Miss V) encouraged me to take the leap and just do it. I want to share my love and knowledge of the game to the younger athletes coming up.
From an early age I developed a love for the game, I started playing the sport at the age of 3. From there I continued to play club soccer throughout my childhood, then playing for my varsity team in high school, and then getting the opportunity to play collegiate soccer.
I believed this resource would work because soccer is growing in our city and state. The young athletes don’t have as many opportunities for skill development and enhancement as those in bigger cities.
What gets me the most excited is seeing young athletes improve in their skills and confidence. Over the last couple of years I have been coaching the younger generations and seeing them enhance their skills and knowledge which makes me excited for the future of soccer in Topeka.

Damian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I work with athletes that want improve their individual skills. Once I meet the athlete, I come up with an individual plan on what they want to work on.
What I feel separates me from others is that I work with children on a day to day basis so I am able to make those connections with the athletes.
I am most proud of having a dream and having the courage to put it into action.
I want people to know that Elite Soccer Academy is a judge free zone, no matter what their skill level is. Our doors are open to everyone.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped me is that I have worked in the 501 school district for about 4 years. This includes coaching at Topeka West High School and Landon Middle School. I have also played soccer in the Topeka area for well over 20 years now and have made many connections.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source is the children that I work with at McCarter elementary. I have worked there for 4 years and have made relationships with the students, their parents and my co workers.
