We recently connected with Damaya Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Damaya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA! Once I started my business, I did not receive a sell right away. However, I remained active on my social media platforms. Staying consistent is key. It was a couple of months in when I started getting random followers and then BOOM my first order! A popular spiritual page randomly reposted one of my candles and the business took off from there! I feel as though people don’t understand how much a simple like, comment, or repost can do for a small business. I am forever thankful for that repost.

Damaya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Divine Flambeau LLC is an online spiritual boutique brand specializing in prayer and manifestation candles, guided journals, and much more. My focus for my company is to promote self-care and personal development. Working in stressful corporate America influenced my journey of self-care and spirituality. I found peace in meditation, journaling, and candles. Family and friends started inquiring about some of the candles I was making, giving me the idea to start my own candle company. I am proud of the positive feedback and reviews that I have received from customers. When customers inform me that my products have helped them with their spiritual journey, it affirms that I’m on the right path. I want my potential customers to know that hard work, pure intentions, sweat, and tears went into my brand.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients would most definitely be social media and word of mouth. I personally believe social media is even more powerful than word of mouth. Although, I’m still building my social media following, it has been a challenge. When I or others promote my products whether it is via Instagram or Youtube the engagement increases drastically. Social media is its own world. The people you can reach, not only nationwide, but worldwide from just a single post is amazing. I even had popular influencers promote my products in the past. That’s the way to go in order to get new clients from my experience.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I currently sell on my website www.divinefambeau.com. However, I started on Etsy. I strongly recommend starting your small business sales on Etsy’s platform or a similar site. I still get Etsy orders till this day even though I have a full website now. My “OG Customers” prefer Etsy I guess lol. We are currently in the process of getting our journals added to Amazon. In my opinion, it’s best to sell your products on different e-commerce platforms – it expands the audience.
