Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Damarys Gonzalez . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Damarys , appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think I’ll always remember the first time I tried to learn how to use photoshop and how overwhelming it was. Not one bit of it made sense to me at all but I knew that I had to start somewhere and that eventually I would have to learn how to use it. I remember thinking to myself “I don’t think I’m ever going to learn how to use this”. As overwhelming and intimidating it felt to me I continued to mess with it to try to see if I could learn how to do something as simple as change the color of a certain object. I indeed failed but I didn’t let it get to me, I just moved along and decided to watch some tutorials and with time I learned how to use photoshop, not perfectly but there’s definitely been progress. I think everyone gets to a point where things will feel very unfamiliar and it can be very intimidating but if you have determination and a little bit off patience then you’ll get there.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Damarys Gonzalez and I am the owner of DG Creative, a photography business that I started about a year ago. I’m 21 years old and a mom to an amazing two year old toddler boy. Taking my sons monthly milestones his first year of life really opened my eyes on what I truly enjoyed, capturing special moments. Ever since then I have dedicated my free time learning how to Improve my craft. I absolutely love helping my clients capture their special moments wether it’s a Birthday, a pregnancy, or simply just yearly family pictures.
How did you build your audience on social media?
With anything that you’re starting new with there’s going to be a lot of learning, nobody right off the bat knows how to do things perfectly and that’s okay. With photography and using social media as my way to gain clientele and reach my target audience I had to figure out what worked for me and it took a while to kinda get an idea of what worked and what didn’t. My advise for anyone that is trying to build an audience on social media would be to give your business a face, and by that I mean create content with you talking about your business, introduce yourself and connect with your supporters and stay involved. Go out and create different types of content for your socials and most importantly go out and meet new people. You never know who you’re going to meet, or what valuable information or advise you’ll receive. Staying consistent is a must and remember that good things take time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing that people like your craft enough that they’re willing to spend their hard earned money on supporting your business. I think most creatives will agree with me that a lot of the times us creatives, we doubt our abilities and it’s hard to believe in our own craft especially something that is our own style and taste. Having that support from our communities mean a lot and helps us to keep going and to get better everyday with what we do.
