We were lucky to catch up with Dalton Tracee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalton, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
“How did you learn to do what you do?”
I began my journey in drawing and painting at a young age, thanks to my grandmother who introduced me to art while she worked on wallpapering. My early experiences involved coloring books and observing her craft, which sparked my interest. In high school, I took a few formal art classes which further refined my skills and understanding.
“Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?”
Reflecting on my learning journey, I believe that consistent practice is the key to improvement. If I were to expedite my learning process, I would have focused more on experimenting with colors and understanding their interactions. Learning color theory and exploring techniques for mixing colors effectively could have accelerated my progress.
“What skills do you think were most essential?”
Among the skills I found most essential in my development as an artist, mastering the art of observation stands out. Learning to perceive and understand the nuances of light and shadow, as well as honing my ability to depict them accurately, has been crucial. Additionally, cultivating patience and embracing the iterative nature of artistic growth have been invaluable.
“What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?”
One significant obstacle I encountered was the temptation to rush through the learning process. At times, I found myself too focused on reaching a particular level of proficiency quickly, neglecting the importance of enjoying and immersing myself in the learning journey. Overcoming this impatience and learning to appreciate the process at every stage was a challenge I had to address.
In conclusion, my journey in art has taught me the importance of patience, practice, and continuous learning. While there are ways to optimize the learning process, such as delving deeper into color theory, the journey itself is a valuable part of artistic growth that should be savored and embraced.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the process of channeling the energy and ideas swirling in my mind onto paper or canvas. There’s a sense of liberation and fulfillment that comes from translating abstract thoughts and emotions into tangible forms of expression. It feels amazing to our poor and create something that may inspire others.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, society can best support artists and creatives by sharing their work on social media, spreading the word to friends, checking in on them, and purchasing their creations whenever possible. These actions help to amplify their voices and contribute to a thriving creative ecosystem
