We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dalton Tengelsen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dalton thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses
I believe family businesses are a great thing! in a family business you’re more comfortable with your peers, you’re likely to understand the families you’re working with and more likely to have fun!
When my wife (a photographer as well) and I have children, we plan to allow them their own individuality. If they follow our path that’s absolutely wonderful to us, but if they decide to do something completely different that’s great too!
My own experience working with my wife has shown me the sacrifice that comes out of a family owned business. Since it’s just the two of us it’s often hard to take time off because who would run the ship? However I would not trade it for the world, we have so much fun working together, and she really helps to bring me out of my shell!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dalton Tengelsen, I am 25, and the owner of riverpine studios!
When I was in 5th grade I fell in love with making lego stop motion videos with my little brother and best friend. From there, every hobby I picked up throughout middle school and high school I filmed and created montages or vlog style content. I fell in love with filming, editing and creating everything in my life. I considered this career as I approached the end of high school, I was in the audio visual class at mill creek when coach kutter asked me if I wanted to do this for a living, he told me I should consider it and that I did…. Until I began to steer away after I was told about the competitiveness. I finished high school, tried out college (spoiler that didn’t work for me) but I landed myself a job with my now wife’s brother doing commercial electric work. Another spoiler for you, that didn’t work either. I just wasn’t happy at any job I had, I was always thinking about what coach kutter said to me but in September of 2019 I heard about a freelancing site and decided to work for myself even though I was always told it wasn’t a great idea.
I listened to myself and now my passion for videography, photography, and creating is now my full time job.
What sets me apart from others is I do not stick to one niche. I’ve done product photo and video, real estate photo and video, you name it, I’ve probably shot it photo and video haha!
I am most proud of my drive, my passion for this industry pushes me to keep going, keep trying new things, meeting new people, and seeing new places.
For potential clients, if you have a need, I have a camera! I truly love getting to meet new people and experiencing the passion you have for the purpose im shooting.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Enjoying the process! From start to finish I love watching clients projects progress, I love getting the feedback good or bad because it helps me know I’m doing good, or need improvement!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped build my reputation was simply doing my job. It’s my job to make sure I capture what you want to my best ability, when you do that, clients speak for you, and my awesome clients have sure spoken for me!
