Dalton, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

How I got into the industry ——-

When I officially showed up on the scene was when I started my own record label back in 2018 5 years ago to be exact my business name was to be illaFlo Records and my professional skills were mixing mastering recording vocals making instrumentals and songwriting plus recording session coaching for artists and other clients plus I do promo and marketing for the client / artist as well I also do professional wrapping and typical record producing activities another opportunity presented itself 3 years ago when I landed an independent record deal with Bentley records out of New York City one of the biggest independent artist labels in the well-respected game currently I am a gold status artist being with them now for the past three almost four years they presented the opportunity to publish some singles and two of my EPS my first EP is named banger alarm and my second EP is called illaFlo Records with 16 tracks and One track being an intro track I’ll be working on my third album this year with Bentley records.

Business

I started illaFlo Records in 2018 with nothing but a horrible recording studio on my mom’s basement over the years I’ve developed relationships that span across the state and are very artistic in their nature the artists the record label has worked with that I own to name a few are JasMarie, LouilLee, B-Ready and T-Bombz. The first studio I ever had had five bedrooms in 1600 square feet it was just perfect moving out of my mom’s basement into that I loved it we all loved that I should say the artist especially there was a room for me my sister she’s a graphic designer and Entourage room drumming room and studio room for us we work there for about 7 and 1/2 months then I had another studio which was across from the zoo in Minot North Dakota for about a year that was a two bedroom office with an Entourage room in it studio recording room we got a great deal on a desk that was a $2,000 desk for $500 that we used in the studio room it was great photos were good times for the currently looking for new office space in Bismarck North Dakota the capital of North Dakota to relocate here for better Business and better opportunities

Discipline

As far as discipline goals whenever I head to train people to obey follow the rules or exhibit specific codes of behavior I didn’t absolute best mannor I could. And for me following a certain disciplinary code for myself I did the best I could I had to have a tight budget always turning down new opportunities as they arose due to lack of proper funding I still to this day and having to respectfully decline opportunities that the label and myself are presented with I started making rap music at age 14 and I’m 31 now so being disciplined over the last 17 years regarding my career moves and industry opportunities has been extremely challenging all of my extra dollars over the years have always been back into the craft and business as we know it I still and faced with disciplinary decisions to follow and make every day it’s an ongoing battle that’s a journey to say the least and it won’t stop for anybody that gets to the top if they make it to the top it’s going to be a perpetual thing discipline you know

Craft

I’ve been working on developing my craft now for a total of 17 years and working on developing my skills as an MC and as a record producer/business owner and what to do with the skills once I acquired them where to go with them and what to do next my rap style is unique with wave after wave of emotion and bold delivery and complex rhyme schemes witty and downright lit I guess you could say I focused on developing my lyricism to the point of just freestyling most of the tracks I’ve recorded and published I have a lot of material and lyrics in my mind that one tends to not forget what’s been created in my mind always I write rap and other lyrics when I’m in the mood I’ve really worked at getting to know my daw which is studio One artist version I’ve come to learn it’s extremely versatile for all it’s end users and the user friendliness of the d a w is phenomenal magnificent actually last 10 years I’ve been working on an insane amount to say the least my talents at vocal recording mixing and mastering music I also play piano on The pianist at heart

Biography

Dalton Gunnar Johnson aka his stage name $helta born Jan 13th in the magic city aka Minot, ND. He was the first child of three children. At a young age, Dalton began being introduced to the music of all sorts including playing the piano. Dalton started rapping at the age of 14. Growing up with a single mom and two siblings wasn’t easy. So, Dalton had to become the man of the house at a young age. Dalton used this situation he was in to add fuel to the fire of making monumental moves in the underground rap scene. Dalton started recording music around the age of 15 and really began to shape his craft in the oncoming years. For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

I have to say the most rewarding aspect of being an artist for creative for me would be the fact that I can express myself through my music it helps me with my pain with my struggles and with my day-to-day living. I also really love to help other artists get out what they have inside through their music it’s just so beautiful when you have an artist that has an idea and it comes to fruition with your help with my help I should say.

Have you ever had to pivot?

When I signed with Bentley records three almost four years ago was probably the biggest pivot in my music career.
