We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dally Powell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dally below.
Hi Dally, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I can actually remember the exact moment things clicked with me. I used to watch this old Ozzy VHS tape over and over when I was a little kid. There was that iconic picture of Ozzy holding Randy up while he was shredding and something about that image burned the love of music into my soul.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started playing shows at live venues when I was 14. All I wanted to do in middle school and leading up into high school was be in a metal band. I was definitely… that kid haha. I played in a couple bands all through high school up into college and finally called it quits (for awhile) when the whole “real world” thing caught up to me. For about 6/7 years I did pretty much nothing besides work, which led me to eventually have my own pizza restaurant. About 3 years in to my business, I finally found free time again to pursue music. What started as side project after side project.. eventually somehow landed me a spot playing bass for Dispositions. Given I’ve followed the band since the dawn of their existence, it’s been a surreal experience. Being able to balance the band, the business, and the family gives a real feeling of success pretty much every day.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal in this journey is to seriously take in every experience to its fullest. Being out of music for so long really gave me a different perspective on how to enjoy the moments in the band. Whether it’s on the road driving to play a show in the desert, or headlining a hometown show, every moment matters to me in just that slightly different level now.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I really get the most out of live show interactions. Seeing people vibe with us during a set to me is one of the rawest connections music can bring out. There’s some serious power there.
