We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dallas Segno a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dallas, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents gave me a lot of money. I was really sick for about a decade and they gave me about $2k/m for about that long. I didn’t like taking their money, and I found out it was more common than I thought, but it really helped me out. But who knows, maybe I’d have gotten better sooner had I not taken their money.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m called Dallas $egno. I’m known for archetypal iconographic patterned paper mosaics. I prefer music and comics. I also make these beautiful metal screens. It would be nice to have rivals.
The masks and vacant details are meant for viewer to imprint themselves upon the art. It’s really simple, playful stuff.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Hilarious.
NFTs are a simple protocol that can be used as an access code to enter a paywall and that’s about it. But is blockchain the best we have for access keys?
It doesn’t protect anything. Not only can anyone access the link’s contents, the file you upload to the ipfs isn’t permanent. It all requires upkeep. If its a weblink, websites eventually die too, so the attached link mechanism is a broken methodology (the scam part) that people prop up, when it should be ignored. However, one potential would be to link to an empty folder, instead of an image, that is propagated with updates from time to time. (But that isnt how you profit from trading royalties!!!) Nobody mentions that if you can exchange the link with a different file with the same filename anytime you like. You can even replace it with any filetype with an incorrect suffix so it can be any filetype you like.
When I was in the thick of the NFT boom I was in several private conversations with marketers laughing at how stupid everyone was for falling for every rug pull that could happen. I got rug pulled a few times, it was really quite hilarious. Lots of money down the drain. I remember trying to explain that first paragraph to some marketers in spaces on Twitter (now x). One guy got mad and changed the subject. A another group had no idea why I would want to improve the scam. They had all these roadmaps and I don’t think anyone followed through with them besides bored apes. Then fully doxxed professionals were running essentially, churches and taking people’s money, no regrets. I digress.
There was one guy I told about the ipfs and he tried laughing at me about how to improve the experience, that we got in a heated argument. People thought it was so funny they had me in private meetings where they discussed the system of deception used to coerce people to buy in. I saw some promising projects for customization that I really believed in that were abandoned. OH WELL XD. What a waste of money.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m going to be the greatest. Obviously.
