We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dalissia Grothe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dalissia below.
Dalissia, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My whole life, I knew I waned to be in the medical field, as least that is what I thought! I loved medicine. I loved helping people and learning how to help people by understanding how the human body works. I went on to get my Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, graduating in 2011. I ended up landing a great job as an Orthopedic PA which I stayed most of my professional career. During that time, I got married and had 2 children. Well, then 2020 happened. The tumultuous time of COVID combined with being a mom of 2 small children, unreliable childcare due to the times it became clear to me that I needed to shift my focus. I ended up leaving my job to spend my time and energy with my children and be a stay at home mom. Even though that was never in the future plans and it was a huge risk to leave a job I seemingly worked my whole life for; it was the perfect and right decision for me in the end! I have always been creative and crafty! If I had any free time growing up, you knew you could find me doing some sort of craft or project. Well within 3 months of leaving, I got an urge to bake my son’s birthday cake. Had I ever decorated a cake before? No. Did I have any idea what I was doing? No. But if you know anything about me, I am determined! I was not going to give up. I didn’t have any of the proper tools but boy, it actually looked pretty good! I totally impressed myself and I was already excited to make my next cake. Luckily, my daughter’s birthday was the following month. Her cake turned out pretty good as well and I was from that moment on I was hooked! I ended up asking all my friend’s with kids if I could do their birthday cake for practice and the rest is history! I always say “I accidentally started baking super awesome cakes!” And if it wasn’t for the risk that I took by leaving my job, I wouldn’t have stumbled into this and I am grateful for that!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I make custom cakes and cupcakes! Really any cake that you would like! I am always up for a challenge and like trying new things. It has been a fun craft to learn. I mostly enjoy how excited people get when their vision comes to life. And who doesn’t like cake?!
I think I am set apart from others because I like to go above and beyond for my clients. I am not scared to try new things and I will try my hardest to make your vision on a cake! I am most proud of learning this on my own and not giving up when I had a complete cake fail ha!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love making people happy! It is like my brain is always moving and looking for the next thing to create so it is really fun to me to see the vision (that I can clearly see in my mind) come to life on basically a blank canvas. I make a lot of kid’s birthday cakes and it really is so fun to see the smiles on their faces. Now, I am known as the ‘cake lady” to all the neighborhood kids.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would love to own a bakery one day. My 7 year old daughter has also started baking her own cakes and we have a dream to open a mother/daughter bakery one day! As a stay- at- home mom now, it has a been a very nice creative outlet for me. Remember when I said when I was little, you could find me doing some sort of art or project? Well, now even as an adult, my family knows they can always me in the kitchen baking or decorating a cake. It has been a really great blessing!
