Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dalila Ramos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dalila thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I have been in the mortgage/real estate space for 23yrs. In 2019, I decided I wanted to brand myself, set myself apart. I love tacos🌮, and In late 2019 I decided to do “Taco Tuesday” I would eat tacos every Tuesday and talk about mortgage, homeownership, housing, initiatives, etc.. I formed a whole company based on my Taco Tuesday Talks w/Dalila series.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been in the mortgage industry for 23yrs. For the most part, everyone in mortgage stumbles into the industry. Nobody ever grows up, goes to college, and says. I want to be a loan officer, or a realtor, NOBODY! I started back in 2001, and it’s been one of the greatest decisions of my life! I have worked so many channels of our industry. I was a loan officer, and Account Executive, worked on title insurance, Home Equity lines of credit, recruited, and much more. Each role taught me more and more about the industry and how it works. I applied everything I was learning and bought my first property at 24 yrs. (oh yea, I am also an investor) I found out pretty quickly that there is power in properties and owning. I am also a double minority. I am have Latina/half Black, and was born and raised in the projects of Chicago. My parents were both addicts, and I was raised by the best Grandmother the good Lord could have given me! I grew up to be just like my Mami Aida (Grandma) and I am very proud of that.
I am also a burn victim, ( was in a bad fire at 4 yrs old) and a cancer survivor, (was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in 1995)
Nothing was passed onto me from my family, or I had money. Everything I’ve accomplished is owed to GOD, my drive, and my love for the homeownership game.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
By 2022 I was in a VP position, and heading up the talent acquisition, and diverse segments channels. With our industry declining, I could see the writing on the wall, and my position was on the chopping block. I was let go in late March 2022. I remember it was a Friday (which they always seem to let you go for the weekend) I took that weekend to pray, and come Monday morning I had made the decision to move forward and pour everything I had into my own company. I was tired of giving my creative talents to corporate America, and never feeling fully valued and appreciated. That was over 2.5 yrs ago. I am super grateful for that time of prayer and for having faith in myself!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I know this is extremely specific to me and my personal backstory. I also know that it’s a bit dark, but anytime I am at a crossroads, and in a hard time in life or my business, I tell myself, well what can be worse?! I have already been on fire and survived! The fact I remember being on literal fire, flames and all, and lived to survive that is crazy!
