Daleshia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In the past I allowed a professor to instill fear in me by telling me I would not be a good therapist due to my underperformance in his class back in 1999 at the PVAMU (You Know). Those words stuck with me even 10 years after graduating with my Masters. When I would try to prepare myself to move forward I would here his voice and the harmful words. For 10 years Fear Kept Me Stagnate. Avoiding my calling I worked for a non profit, performing as case manager. I later became a special education teacher moving up to School Counselor. Taking a risk is something I rarely do. I always second guess myself when risk taking is the topic. After 10 years, I finally became tired and burnout with MY chosen career, so I decided to silent the noise of others expectation that were placed on me and decided to apply myself to what I was called to do. After passing my state licensing exam, I was asked to go full-time working with someone I had known for quite sometime, I could not refuse the salary or the flexibility, scared to leave what I had known for 12 years. After working in my first therapist position for 2 years that I enjoyed, I still did not feel fulfilled. I did not believe or feel like I was walking in my purpose. Then one day the owner apologized and shared that he decided to dissolve his company which left me without a plan or a clue. My husband my biggest supporter prayed for me and told me to leap and do what I always encourage others to do, “Do it Scared”, and man was I scared. So I did it I really did it, not only am I a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, Florida, Oregon, New Jersey, and Georgia, I am the owner of YSP: Your Safe Place Counseling PLLC a thriving private practice in The Woodlands, Texas. Come see me Yall.

As a mental health therapist, my journey into this field began with a deep passion for helping others navigate life’s challenges and find inner peace and fulfillment. I was drawn to psychology and counseling early on after a degree change in nursing. My path led me to pursue a master’s degree in counseling, where I honed my skills and knowledge to effectively support individuals facing a wide range of mental health issues. Over the years, I’ve worked in various settings, including clinics, hospitals, private practice, and local jails gaining invaluable experience and insights along the way. In my practice, I offer a range of services aimed at empowering my clients to overcome obstacles, heal from past traumas, and cultivate resilience and self-awareness. From individual therapy sessions to group workshops and support groups, I provide a safe and compassionate place for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. One of the key problems I aim to solve for my clients is helping them break free from patterns of negative thinking and behavior that may be holding them back from living a fulfilling life. Through evidence-based therapeutic techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and trauma-informed approaches, I help clients develop coping skills, build emotional resilience, and create positive change in their lives. What sets me apart from others in my field is my approach to everyone’s mental health. I pride myself with making all ages feel comfortable and free to speak without judgement. I am most proud of the positive impact I’ve been able to make in the lives of my clients, witnessing their growth and transformation as they overcome challenges and achieve their goals. It’s incredibly rewarding to see individuals reclaim their joy, confidence, and sense of purpose, and regaining their inner peace. For potential clients and followers, I want them to know that my practice is rooted in empathy, authenticity, and non-judgment. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues, you are not alone, and there is hope for a brighter tomorrow. I am here to support you every step of the way, guiding you toward healing, growth, and self-discovery. So start your journey today and lets address the elephant in the room in Your new Safe Place.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One experience that comes to mind is when I faced a particularly challenging period early in my career as a mental health therapist. I was working with a client who was dealing with complex trauma and severe depression, and despite my best efforts, progress was slow and setbacks were frequent. It was a daunting and emotionally taxing situation, and there were moments when I felt overwhelmed and unsure if I was making a difference. However, instead of becoming discouraged, I leaned into my training, support network to help guide me through this difficult time. I sought out additional resources, consulted with colleagues, and engaged in ongoing professional development to expand my therapeutic toolkit and gain new insights into working with clients facing similar challenges.I also prioritized self-care and resilience-building practices to help me stay grounded and focused amidst the demands of the work. I made time for regular exercise, mindfulness meditation, and creative outlets like writing and painting, which helped me recharge and maintain a sense of balance in my life.
