Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dale T. Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dale T., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Learned writing from Stephen King in college. Began to sell stories while working on my first novel, and now have over a hundred published. Changed paths, going from agent to small press to independent author to publisher, Began to guide and teach other writers and write non-fiction help books for authors while building a personal career in fiction and more. Now a successful panelist, lecturer, and workshop leader in writing and publishing.
Research was the key, and when the industry underwent major changes, moved with the times and adapted to the new model of publishing. Writers were hungry for learning new methods on how to cope with the changing world, and I had a knack for navigating them through their art and business model.

Dale T., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Undertaking fiction writing, I never envisioned myself as a business person- now have my own publishing company, and help other writers get to market with their work. A modern writer now has to learn business and so much more to be able to sell and maintain any sort of career. My eye for quality and years in the business helps me edit the work of others and get them to publication. With the knowledge gained, I wrote books to walk writers through their publishing decisions and methods. I developed courses for learning, and have taught at national writer conferences.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Was following the traditional publishing path of finding an agent and submitting a novel in hopes that some stranger in Manhattan would pass the book along to the editorial department for possible publication. Had the agent and some interest, but took too long, and noticed the publishing world was rapidly changing, becoming a dead end for creatives. Changed course to publish my way with small presses. Did a few books that way, and learned I could do all of what they did for myself, keeping control of my art and my business. Changed again, and finally found my true path as an independent author, developing a full-blown business.
Began telling others how they could succeed with the independent model, and became a popular presenter.
Resilience for me is learning to adapt to changing circumstances outside your control. And keeping control of your art is both easier and harder than one imagines.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Very much so. The information is out there, and if not free, much is inexpensive enough to afford. New tools and methodologies arise all the time. Was able to find these resources and do years of research to learn all that I could about the new way of publishing before jumping in. Used the resources to run experiments and proof of concepts.
Now I help others by giving them long lists of available resources, shortening and improving their learning journey.
