We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dale Papp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dale below.
Alright, Dale thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I wouldn’t say my work has been misunderstood really, but my way of taking the music path most definitely has been for many. I am thankful that I had the awareness early on in this journey to study and embrace all music and music culture. I use to hold strictly to one genre but when I gave chances to other types of music and writing styles, that’s when I really started becoming a better and wide range writer. I’ve really taken my time to get that education down and I’ve enjoyed it alot. That’s what music is meant for anyway. There are no rules. Many people saw this as me being lost and failing but really I haven’t been more found til now in my artistic mind and comfort. I’m sure there will be much more to discover. I’m looking forward to it.
Dale, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an inspiring professional songwriter and I love writing so much. I am working my way up the ladder to hopefully get a cut by an artist soon. I want nothing more than to see that happen. I use to play alot of shows in the St. Louis area and even lived in Nashville, TN for a short while to really study the different forms of songwriting. I spent the fall of 2022 in Chicago writing for a new kind of project. I am also going to pursue an artist career this year and see what happens. I’m a really simple minded person and I write songs that tell the truth. In today’s world our youth is being led astray and are lied to alot. I want to provide education on vast life topics through my songs, channeling from my own/others life experiences. It’s a beautiful gift and I really want to make the world a better place with it. I’m very blessed to be able to write and also for my supportive family, especially my parents who believe in more than anyone. I realize not alot of people had that growing up and how special that is. That’s all God.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I like this question quite a bit. I know for a fact that some of my music will be misunderstood at first because of how truthful and durect it is. I never divide a situation in a song, meaning I never take sides and I call out everything wrong/right in it’s story. I play fair all across the board. For example, I have song called “Not Who I’ve Been” and it’s me calling myself out about how horrible I was to my parents and people at one time in my life. That’s interesting really. I also have a song called “Unsolved Cases” and a verse talks about a life taken in the city where noone knows who’s guilty. That’s as detailed as the verse goes and no sides are taken. Just an unsolved case. So I’m excited to make the world think, not just listen.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being able to chase a dream like this is that there are a million ways to do it and there are no rules. Anything can happen. The fact that I can write whatever I want is like unleashing a hungry wolf on its prey. I’m all over it. It’s a blank canvas and I get to paint it however I want. It’s the only time for me where I don’t feel like the world is telling me no and judging me. I absolutely love helping other writers and making a great song. Another rewarding part about writing songs is that sometimes they write me. I step back and look and my piece of paper and just think sometimes. How is it that the song knows me better than myself and I’m the one who started it? That’s just beautiful and goes to show how powerful art is to the human race.
