We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dalaine Bartelme. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dalaine below.
Dalaine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
When I was a senior in high school, our choir was invited to sing at a competition out of state. My family couldn’t afford to send me. My friend, who was also in the choir, really wanted me to be able to go. She decided to ask other members of the choir that weren’t planning on going but had some money in their accounts from choir fundraisers if they would donate. She ended up raising enough funds to completely cover the cost of the trip. That was over 30 years ago and it was a kindness that I will never forget.

Dalaine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In February of 2016, I was having lunch with my family at a restaurant when I wished out loud that I wanted something that would fit in my purse so I could color when I had down time instead of being on my phone. My husband and I did some research and we couldn’t find anything like that, so we decided to invent it ourselves! We created COLORpockit, the complete portable coloring kit. We have been selling our products online since November 2018. We started out selling on our own website, but are now available on Amazon, Walmart.com, Etsy, and HSN.
I really believe that coloring is a wonderful self-care activity. It’s creative, relaxing and fun! Supporting the artists who create our coloring cards was really important to me, so we give our artists a 10% commission on every coloring deck that is sold, and we promote them on our social media.
One thing I’m really proud of is our COLORpockit Community Group on our Facebook page. It’s a group where members share their completed coloring cards and where I share coloring tutorial videos and news about upcoming sales and insider information. We have 1500 members in the group. So our customers can have a community of supportive friends if they want, in addition to a great product.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We send out a newsletter a couple of times a month. I personally don’t like companies that send me emails every day, so I consciously chose to only send them when we have new products or sales to announce. In the newsletters we also share any news we have about happenings within the company and thank our customers for coming along on this journey with us. Our company is small enough, that I am the “shipping department”. That means that I write “thank you” with a smiley face on each packing slip. I answer any customer service emails myself, and our customers appreciate the quick response. We have a lot of repeat customers and very few returns, which I am very proud of.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The way we built our followers on Facebook was through our ads. We advertise on Facebook and when someone interacts with the ad by liking it, we can send them a request to follow us. Using videos in posts and ads grabs the viewer’s attention. I try to have a good balance in the types of posts I share, in other words, don’t just make it all about selling. I share posts about self-care, art, and inspirational quotes in addition to posts about our products.
