We were lucky to catch up with Dalai Guzman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dalai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My name is Dalai and I’m a full time artist. Being an artist is not that easy but when you find something that makes you different everything changes.
At a young age i started being around every kind of art, dancing, drawing, painting, sculpting. At 15 years old i Took my first makeup classes and after that everything went really different. my mom and i thought about make it a career and thats what happend.
At the same time i was studying direction of cinematography and there is when i took the biggest decision in my life, move to another country by myself leaving everything behind.
i was trying so hard to get to people, show them my art, till i got an small opportunity. the only thing that went through my mind was that i left everything in my country for this little space, i never thought that this little space Will become a huge plataform where i teach and show what i do.
im really gratefull for every risk that i’ve taken so far and taking that risk of moving to another country to show really what i do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Through the years the name Dalai have had different meanings, but always staying in the gothic aesthetic, i’m a lover of dark Colors, i Think there is so much space to create with the darkness of something . Two years ago i launched my first clothing line which is really focus on pieces with bleach, with a lot of experiments of tshirts, sweaters, pants and a lot more, i went only with the tshirts.
all of these aesthetic of darkness with the brand was created through all the makeups that i created in the past, i love Halloween so thats my favorite date to create characters that you’re never gonna find anywhere else.
Another part of my makeup career definitely is my everyday which is working for music videos and photoshoots, that’s one of my favorite things, being on set, i can share with people who like to create as me.
i’m really proud of every piece i’ve made but one of the Most important things i’ve worked on is doing makeup for the NBA player Chris Paul for a magazine, i grew up watching basketball and meeting him was amazing.
All of this didn’t happend in a day or a week, it Took me almost 6 years of hard work to get to this point. one thing that sets me apart from others is the discipline i have, it’s ok to take your time to create but i try my best to keep creating every day. coming up with new ideas is the Most difficult part, sometimes takes weeks to set up ideas, practice is the key for a good result.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In this era there is more support to artist but we still in the time where opportunities for new artist in the Industry are really Limited, usually being in the Industry is being around people that have more than 10 years of expirience, as a younger generation we can take those ideas with the trends and combine the experience to make a huge proyect.
building a healthy and supportive community is the first step to keep growing.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
since i started my social media as “dalaimua” i used to prepare so much my content that it Took me weeks just to create one post, that didn’t help me at all because i was not Constant since it Took me so long. i did one post more natural and organic about bleaching clothing and it went absurdly viral, after that the content the i gave to my public was fast but with the important information and beautiful result. usually it takes me a day or two to create a video since it is really organic.
showing the good parts and the bad ones too helps out a lot.
