We recently connected with Dakotah Jennifer and have shared our conversation below.
Dakotah, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and small business owner. At 8 and 9, I was making mini purses out of felt (not well, mind you), or “selling” envelopes at after-day at 11 & 12. It was only when I found tie-dye during the pandemic and discovered I was actually good at it, that I decided to start selling. Now, as a recent graduate, working part-time, it’s a full business now. I did the research on getting the license, paying the taxes, getting an apartment with room for inventory. If I could change anything, I would have gone all-in sooner. I started getting more serious about my business this past year, and I wish I would’ve seen its potential sooner.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a recent college graduate who started a tie-dye business. I sell tie-dye loungewear, including sweatsuits, long sleeves, PJs, totes, and more. Our slogan is “the look good & feel good kind of loungewear,” the reason I love tie dye the most is the creation of the product and the reviews I get from happy customers. People feeling good wearing my tie dye is what makes me most happy. When it gets colder, peple want to be comfortable while also avoiding the ~i left home in pajamas~ look. dakjen tie dye sweatsuits allow people to feel warm, comfortable, and look put-together.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I really had to learn how to see my product from the outside – from a customer perspective. I love the sweatsuit, half of my wardrobe is tie dye at this point, I couldn’t understand why people wouldn’t want to buy. I had to remove myself and my biases from the situation in order to advertise more and better.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of having a business is the lack of disconnect. With most jobs in today’s society, you’re really disconnected from the whole “eco-system” that your work creates. With entrepreneurship & small businesses, you’re a one-stop shop– you see the work from start to finish–there’s a certain satisfaction. Not to mention you have control of your own destiny– your business goes where you want it to, and you make mistakes and gain insights all on your own.
