We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dakota Poorman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dakota, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
How Dakota Poorman came to be..
All my life I grew up around music, and all I ever wanted for the longest time was a guitar. At age 7 I asked my parents for a guitar and that Christmas, Santa brought me one. I started taking lessons, but realized I wasn’t ready for it. My hands couldn’t do the chords on the full size guitar I had, so I set the guitar down.
I messed with it for a bit here and there, but sports was where my heart was at that moment in time. At a very early age it was the love of baseball that took me away from music for a bit.
But as I got older, around junior high I started to really dive into classic rock; Bob Seger, John Cougar Mellencamp, AC/DC, Foreigner, Chicago all the greats. And I started picking the guitar back up and messing around with it.
I then asked my parents for lessons, and I went to a few and then they had this class at the place I was getting lessons that if you wanted to start a band,, you could. So I begged and begged my folks to allow me to start a band with this awesome organization. It was like School of Rock!
Literally.
I did that for a few years and during that time, I’d bring my guitar to school to practice what my teacher gave me to work on, I’d sit in the halls and practice, and kids would walk by and put me down and belittle me and tell me I’d be nothing, and that I should just give up. It was hard at times but I stayed focused and pushed pass all the bullies and BS. It was rough but, music definitely was a safe haven for me.
After playing in a few bands with the school, I ventured out to start my own project. I grew up down the street from a kid I went to school with and rode the bus with, found out he played bass and guitar, so we started getting together and hanging out and jamming. He invited his other friend that played drums over, and soon we started playing covers and just jamming for fun. Songs that I learned in the School of Rock.
Well we started to get really tight, and our family and friends were pushing us to take it to the next step. Playing publicly. We took the leap. We started playing coffee shops, breweries, parties, whatever we could. It was just a great time being teen kids in a band playing songs and just thinking we made it.
Fast forward ten years, I quit my 9 to 5 to pursue music full time. And it’s lead me to a lot of amazing places; Texas, Wyoming, California, Tennessee, Oklahoma, the list goes on. But, I don’t know where I’d be today if it wasn’t for music and believing in myself that I could do this full time!
Dakota, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you wanna party, throw back some cold ones, and just get rowdy, you don’t have to look any further. I’m your guy!
The shows are high energy, and just in your face non stop, and I make everyone apart of the show. No one is left out!
I banter with people and get the crowd involved. If you wanna have a good time, come to a Dakota Poorman show and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being myself. People are tired of being lied to. There are so many fake artist out there that say the right thing at the right time, in front of the right people at the right time. And they’re like the Boy Scouts and it makes me sick. If that’s you, do you. But that’s not me. I’m a hard dose of reality and people get it and they love it.
I’m the same on stage as I am off. I’ll be your best friend but don’t mess with my family or run down my name. If you don’t like me, I don’t care. There’s people out there that will.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Just playing shows in new markets, pushing the socials; Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc. selling merch and just really word of mouth. Come to a show and find out what I’m talking about!
