We recently connected with Dakota Morgan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dakota, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The moment all of us creatives have is one we always remember. The time you decide that YOU are the one who is going to create. As a kid, I grew up with movies, comics, video games and books so basically a common nerd some might say. There came a day as I was driving to my job at the zoo years ago and of course listened to many podcasts as I still do but while listening to Kevin Smith and watching some behind the scenes of movies the night before I sat in traffic as it didn’t move I thought about them and all the other creatives I have watched all my life and there was snap. The moment when it just CLICKS! The moment you decide wait a second, that can be me! Every creator is someone who wasn’t just born into it but actually work their way into it! That was a single thought that pushed me into sitting down with a notebook and starting a career as a creative. Realizing on any day that you are able to do it and there is nothing in the way of becoming a creative!
Dakota, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started with a podcast that now has been running for 4 years called The Comic Chronicle Podcast and that was my first creative piece and you can listen wherever you catch podcasts. From that begun a career in filmmaking with cinematography, script writing, Set and costume building and even acting. You can also catch some more upcoming work with SGGS Comics with a few of my series I write bringing some new worlds for you to explore. Now a days I run a Paleontological themed show on my YouTube channel Dakota Morgan called Dino Times that you can catch every weekend learn about more science. I also run a toy unboxing channel called Collect Quest for those collectors out there and of course share videos across my social media and YouTube pages of my adventures of exotic animal caretaking, especially the crocodiles!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing as a creative we can receive is the good we put out there. The good has many forms but some of which include the ability to help inspire peoples lives. You never know what thing you may make, wether small or large that may change a person’s life for the good or maybe even inspire them to create themselves! The other part of the good is the ability to create an escape for people. No matter what you may create, it always be an escape for people from whatever may be happening in their lives, just like the big wigs in the creative world do as well.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The past couple years have been difficult of course but working heavily in the film industry in 2020 had to cause some evolution and changes. I had to change and evolve as the industry was shut down and affected even years later. Growing up I volunteered a lot with wild animals in museums, with jack Hanna and even with cats and dogs with the goal of helping to preserve wildlife and other animals. Years later when the creative field went upside down I went back into wildlife and protecting animals and have enjoyed every minute. Of course one doesn’t just stop with filmmaking so like some, I brought filmmaking to my caretaking to capture animals in their beauty and help show people the work that needs to be done and the animals that need our help with videos, pictures and more!
