We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dajeyah B a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dajeyah, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
Social Media has been a major help to most businesses these days rather your’e just starting out, or you’re already successful. I am the brand marketing behind my business because it help’s me save money, as well as helping me tap into my creative side. I am often surprised at the flyers, instagram reels, or concepts that I think go and bring to life behind my brand. The results have definitely shown me that I am on the right path, and I have somewhat of an understanding on how to do brand marketing. I would ensure all business owners to step outside of the box, do research on how you can market your brand, try free apps such as Canva, Tik Tok etc it can be a huge help. There are also a lot of people out there who specialize in brand marketing, If it is in your budget they can definitely make a difference.

Dajeyah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always had an intense passion for cooking since I was fifteen years old. I used to always study my mothers recipes or watch her as she prepared lunch or dinner for my sister & I so it wasn’t too long before I started to play in the kitchen. Once I started to cook and make different meals, the reactions I would get from friends or family members always shocked me. I would be like: “wow so I really can cook?” “you really like the food?” “rate it from 1-10” just amazed how genes can really be passed down because my mother is the GOAT of the kitchen! Which she was taught from my late grandmother. I started Dajeyah the Foodie in 2020 during the pandemic, which hardly no restaurants were opened at the time so I would cook 24/7. Not only do I enjoy cooking, but I enjoy eating at different restaurants, from different cultures and broadening my horizons when it comes to culinary. There is literally no discipline when it comes to cooking, just fun and experience. I started catering small events, and doing “pop-up menu’s” on some weekends just so everyone can have a chance to taste my cooking. I always get compliments on my presentation and how good the meals look through pictures, so what’s better than having folks actually trying and enjoying it? It makes me extremely happy! I want my future potential clients to know this is a black owned business, specializing in meals that varies from casual to luxe. I am now servicing the PA & GA area and would love for you all to be apart of my journey, and have the opportunity to taste my food!

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
When it comes to being a chef, the funding is pretty much easy because it is based off of your clients, orders that you may receive. If I am catering a huge event, My customer(s) are required to put down a 50% deposit which goes toward the grand total of the event. Or if I am doing a “pop-up” event I recommend my customers making pre-orders which also requires a deposit, this is how you have initial funds to go toward purchasing the food and material needed. Once you learn your profit margins, etc everything starts to fluctuate.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has actually been through instagram reels, promoting my brand personally through handing out business cards or just being referred from existing clients who know that my food is the real deal!
