We recently connected with Daiyawn Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daiyawn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
We live in such an entrepreneurial era now and I think it would be beneficial for students in high school to have classes on taxes and How to properly structure your business. People start off not knowing anything and just knowing they want to make money doing what they love to do. So the lack of education to build the base of a business is something I feel would benefit the next generation. Teaching the best money management skills pertaining to your business. Like having separate accounts for your business. It’s a lot I think the education system could teach but the base will be good to get them started.
Daiyawn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daiyawn Smith, I was born and live in Indianapolis, IN. I started my entrepreneurial journey my junior year of college. I invested in my first camera which was a Canon T3i was a kit lens. I’ve been having a camera in my hands since my high school days and I decided to take those skills to college. I went to Indiana University of Bloomington where I majored in telecommunications film And production with a a minor in African American Diaspora Studies. I continued to grow my skills as a filmmaker and photographer and after I graduated college in 2017 I started my LLC called Dai In & Dai Out Productions that same year in October. I started off with Clients paying me $50-80 for a shoot to now me being booked for $10-40,000. I got to this point because of my passion for story telling and creating high quality content for my clients. I’ve always been a hard worker and dedicated to anything I put my focus on. That focus and dedication grew and grew to me now having a successful business but also being able to film for the Indiana Pacers, as well as JD Sports Finishline. I continue to develop my skills and put myself in rooms I know I can learn from. With my business I provide a service that Captures the essence of your brand with our expert marketing video production and photography services. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was sticking to the script. In college they tell you to always follow the script. When you’re in the field working things change a lot so at times you have to pivot in another direction to get the job done. When you’re filming a movie or on set on a corporate gig things do not always go as planned, so always knowing an alternative route or solution to get it done will always help in the long run. Always doing things by the books won’t always get you the best result. So knowing how to pivot when the time ask for it helps tremendously!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my following on social media by just being consistent. Being consistent is one of the easiest but hardest things to do. You know you can do it, it’s just about finding the time for it. Once you know the algorithm of social media and how it works you will see that posting on social media will create your audience because now they know who you are, what you do, and what you look like. Some people tend to not boom with people because they’ve never seen their face or how they are when working. So continuing to show your behind the scene looks and your personality will always win them over.
