We recently connected with Daisy Reyes and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daisy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Throughout the years I have had my business open, I have definitely made many mistakes and learned along the way. However, one of the biggest failures I have experienced has served me as a great lesson. Earlier in 2022, I had a failed experience in opening a brick & mortar storefront. Most of this was caused by associating myself with the wrong business partner and rushing an entire process that is meant to be taken slowly and more considerate. During this time, I spend a lot of time, energy and money. Meanwhile, I was also healing from the passing of a loved one and I was balancing both my 9-5 and school. Luckily, my close friends and family supported this idea and helped wherever they could. Everything seemed to be working well and coming along as we wanted but slowly fell apart. There were many incidents that led me to realizing I was doing this with the wrong person. It took a lot in me to give up since I had spent a lot of time and money but I knew it was not going to workout based on the events happening even before opening for business. With much regret and mixed emotions, I accepted it was not worth it and stepped out. I felt very defeated and upset that things did not go as planned. I felt as if I had not only failed myself but my business and customers. After this experience it was very hard to find motivation to keep my business going. I found myself in a state of depression and falling out of love with my business. In result, my business took a huge toll as well. Sales went extremely low, I got stuck with major inventory and I went MIA on social media. It took me several months to decide that maybe it was best to take some time off and reconsider everything. Fast forward to the beginning of 2023, I realized I did not want to lose my business, that even though we had a major failure, it did not mean it was the end. This was when I decided to restart and rebrand my business post my failure.
Daisy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
To introduce myself, my name is Daisy J Reyes. I am currently 22 years old, however when I started my business I was 19. I started my business back in the peak era of covid in 2020. I decided to start a clothing boutique since I love anything and everything that has to do with style and fashion. Even though I was in my first year of college, I took the time to research and learn about the fashion industry. Everything from sourcing to obtaining my license to be able to sell, I did on my own along with capital funding. When it came to deciding what I wanted to sell, I focused more on young women’s apparel and accessories. At my boutique you can find anything from everyday wear pieces to more dressy and elegant styles. My main goal is for my customers to feel confident in what they wear. I do my best to source quality pieces that are both trendy and unique allowing my customers to meet fashionable trends while also embracing a unique style. At Daisy J Boutique, we believe that fashion has the power to inspire, uplift, and transform. Your wardrobe is an extension of your personality. Embrace your individuality, embrace your style, and let Daisy J Boutique be your partner in fashion as you conquer the world with confidence, grace, and impeccable style.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Personally, since I started my business I have been utilizing Shopify. Shopify has been by far the platform that has helped me with everything in my business. Through Shopify I am able to keep my inventory, reports, webpage and more. It was very easy to navigate as well. The platform offers a variety of both free and paid webpages to choose from. Designing a webpage is super easy as well. You have the ability to add, delete and change anything with just a click of a button. What I loved about Shopify is that when I first started, I got a two week free trial in which I was able to bring my idea to life and see if it was truly something I wanted to pursue without the commitment. Cons about Shopify would be, if you are looking for something more affordable, Shopify is in the middle. The basic membership starts at $40 which is a bit high to other platforms I have heard of. In my opinion though, I think it is worth it considering that you have everything you need for your business.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
As a small business owner it is very important to show appreciation to your clients. A big advantage that we have compared to bigger corporations is that we have a more personal access to our clients. I myself am the one that runs all my social media, as well as emails and logistics. With that I am able to feel more connected with my clients. A way I like to show appreciation to my customers, is by reposting them on our social media pages and adding them to our highlights. Every time we get tagged on a story I add it to my dedicated Instagram highlights for customers. Another way I show appreciation, is rewarding them with a free gift in each order. This free gift in their order is more of a thank you from me personally for choosing my boutique. There are many other options out there and yet they took the time and money to shop with us. Finally, a easy way to keep in touch with clients as a small business owner is by interacting with them on social media. As I stated before, we have the advantage to be closer and more personal with our clients so taking the time to like, respond to their comments or messages goes along way.
