We were lucky to catch up with Daisia Glover recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daisia, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
“You can do whatever you put your mind to.”
This is a phrase my parents told me pretty much every day during my childhood. Through love, affirmation and action, my parents taught me to be confident in myself and my abilities. As I grew into an adult, the confidence they instilled in me helped me to take positive risks in my education and career. Of course, life throws its own curveballs at you and it can become easy to doubt yourself. Nonetheless, when the voice of doubt creeps in, I remind myself that I can do whatever I put my mind to. Starting my small business required me to set goals and bet on myself. It required me to buckle down and put my mind to it!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always enjoyed expressing myself through creative and performative means. What started as a creative outlet during the pandemic turned into a business venture for me. I randomly decided to get a Cricut machine to make gifts and things for myself, my family, and my friends. I thought, if these folks like the stuff I make, other people might like my creations too. I decided to start my business, Made by Dai Originals, by making items that I liked and thought others would like too. I began to create totes, shirts, tumblers, keychains, stickers, and other customs for folks to purchase from my shop.
I am most proud of staying true to myself throughout this journey as a business owner. I create designs I relate to, things that feel authentic to me, I infuse affirmations, joy, and laughter into my products. I want people to feel pride and joy when they receive and use my products.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think I am currently living in a moment of having to pivot in multiple aspects of life. I am a new mom and I’ve had to add that identity marker to my multi-hyphenate self description. Becoming a parent changes a lot. I bring motherhood into every part of my life now. I’m not only making decisions to benefit myself; many of my choices impact my son’s life as well. So now as I think about my career and my small business, I am thinking of ways to pivot that will allow me to maximize my time and earnings. I want to make a beautiful life for my son. I think I always had that goal in mind in the general sense, but now it feels more urgent.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my social media audience is an ongoing feat! I have been able to build my social media following organically over time, often through trial and error. It is sometime I am still working on. Some advice I’d give to someone that’s trying to build their social media is to stay consistent with your posting cadence, find a niche, and don’t take things on social media personally.
