Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daishawn Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Daishawn, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I’m happy to be a Business Owner. I’ve had regular jobs in the past that were great but being a Business Owner is even better. It gives me flexibility I need to be there for my kids. I’m a single mom of 3 kids (one of whom is autistic and one whom is asthmatic). Having to depend on people to get my kids to and from school, doctor appts, extracurricular activities, therapy meetings, etc. was frustrating. I’m not the kind of person who likes to constantly ask people to do things for me. Also, having to constantly take off, come in late, or leave early due to kids appts and things just wasn’t working out. So that’s the reason I started my own Business and I wouldn’t have it not other way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Daishawn Phillips. I’m the Founder of Ya’moni Essentials. Ya’moni Essentials is a unique Beauty Brand that carries all organic beauty products such as High Quality Natural hair care products, Skincare, and Cosmetics for Women, Men, and Kids of ALL hair and skin types. Our products are made Fresh with all natural loving ingredients. This Brand was founded in April of 2022. The reason i started this Brand is because I’m a single mom of 3 boys (1 of whom is Autistic) and having a regular Full-time job along with having to take my kids to and from school, extracurricular activities, therapy sessions for my autistic son, hospital stays, etc. was just too much and overwhelming as i had no flexibility with my work hours. So i started doing research on owning my own Business and finding a niche that would best interest me. Well, I was already on my Natural Hair Journey and looking more into natural products. So after doing extensive research on the products that worked for me, I’d thought about making it my Business/Brand, especially since it gives me the flexibility i need to be home with my kids while still generating income. And this is how Ya’moni Essentials came about.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Starting any business can be hard, especially when it comes to getting the support and finding people that are interested in your niche. The way i built my audience when first starting out, was to reach out to family members and friends. I let them know about my Brand and what i was selling. I also had to give out free samples so they could see how good the products were. Another thing i did, was get some of my family and friends to take pics and videos of them using the product and to also, get their honest reviews on the products. Another way to gain your audience is to run a small ad on facebook and/or on instagram. They have ads you can run for as low as $1 a day. This helps to reach your target audience. Another way to build your audience is to get business cards made and pass them out in stores, local businesses, etc. and let people know what you have going on. Last but not least, be a vendor at a few Popup shops. Popup shops are an excellent networking event that helps your business gain lots of exposure to those who may not know about you…and you can also make money while showcasing your products as well. And just remember…DO NOT get discouraged if your family and friends don’t support you. Most of the time, it’s the strangers that will support you the MOST.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my customers by having a place on my website where they can put in their email and/or phone number to subscribe. It’s FREE to subscribe and i usually send out emails and texts to my subscribers to give them special discounts, our monthly blog, Sales, New Products, etc. I also have a loyalty program on my website where it gives special rewards to those that purchase from the site. So that’s how i connect with my customers.
