We recently connected with Daisha Bostick and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daisha, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Having been raised in a single-parent household I must say that my Mom did an excellent job. She always told me, “Style is what you make it”. This has helped mold and shape me into the creative I am today. Although this was a fashion tip, this principle has bled into my creative sense. At a young age, my mind was unlocked to create boldly and without restraint. Now when I create I cannot be put into a box, and I find myself not being afraid to create things that are out of the ordinary or take risks in my craft. I am forever grateful to my Mom for letting me express myself freely.
Daisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Daisha Bostick and I’m Actor, Producer, and Creative Director. I studied Drama, Television, and Film, and received my degree in Tulsa, OK. I began my career fresh out of college and began Directing and acting, alongside odd jobs. From there I started a youtube channel which allowed me to have full creative control.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We live in a world where people are in need of love, acceptance, motivation, encouragement, affirmation, etc. As a creative, I insist on creating meaningful content that moves the audience, content that when they experience my work they are changed for the better. The most rewarding aspect for me is sitting in a theatre or auditorium and seeing the reaction and response of the viewers and hearing them say how they feel inspired by my work. In addition to this, it’s also rewarding to hear people say how they are going to take this experience and integrate it into their personal life to bring about change or inspire others.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One thing I feel non-creatives may have trouble understanding is that creatives don’t do things in a conventional way. Mostly everything we do is unconventional and unorthodox. In other words the journey we choose in life is not usually the easy route. Using myself as a example, I quit my 9 – 5 to create, and people called me crazy for leaving such a good job with consistent hours just to create, but in my mind I felt crazy spending 80% of my day working on someone else’s vision. It is not always easy being a creative and it takes a lot of courage to do so. Sometimes you have to fight for your art and certain creative choices you make, so it would be nice to not have to fight with those around you on why you’re choosing to live a life dedicated to creating.
