Hi Daisey, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
“Realizing I can grow my practice beyond what I thought possible”. When I transitioned from an in office practice to virtual, I had a true concern of how will I be able to reach the clientele that I want to without any knowledge of marketing or PR or SEO even. By using social media, I realized that there was more than ever a need for my voice and what I offered. Towards the end of my first year in solo practice I had one person who found me though social media purchase my first high ticket offer. I remember thinking “wow, ok my prices are competitive with industry standards, what I offer is excellent customer service and deliver results. I can only succeed”. Sure enough after the first person purchase the lowest tier of my high ticket offer, days later someone purchase the second tier, and the third, I was in true awe that I was slowly finding some tractions in my practice and in my business. I was able to help those in need of my services, while also building a life for myself and as a young entrepreneur starting out, I felt very proud of myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up having a deep passion for nutrition and medicine. It was only until college where an upperclassman in my nutrition class who was applying to Naturopathic Medical school suggested that I consider it for myself. I was already studying and applying to go to a conventional medical school at a top school and the thought of Naturopathic Medical school was definitely not on my radar. I figured I had applied to other programs why give it a shot and see what happens. To my surprise I was now offered the choice of the conventional route of being an MD or trying a more holistic path and becoming an ND, after a long weekend of pondering what my future self would enjoy doing, the more holistic route made sense. Now I can offer my patients hormone and gut health support, manage their pain through acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, nutrition and supplement support.
I keep my patient count small and that sets me apart from other busy practices. I only accept a certain number of new patients amount which ensures that every patients’ need are met and they are successful in their healing journey.
I am proud that now that I am helping more patients, I am getting more referrals, because each person I support gets well and they want their partners, friends, parents to also be well.
Being in an online space is a competitive environment. There are others who do what I do. Some are certified, others are not. It’s hard to decipher for the general public.
I stand on the knowledge I have acquired and applied over the last 8 years, 4 of which have been dedicated to my practice and I know that I am creating a healthy environment where my patients feel heard, not-judge and can finally heal.
Can you open up about how you managed the initial funding?
While my story may differ from others, I did not need much to start my business, as a service-based business. A lot of the tools I needed for my business I already own from being in school so the rest came down to paying what I needed to finally set up the business.
My professor in school joked that I would be so successful, all I would need is a computer and the room the size of a closet. What she meant, I later understood, is that I didn’t need all the bells and whistles to get people well. She was right.
After filing for my LLC and later paying for my health record system, everything else I was doing virtually I could do from home.
I did have money saved from working at a previous practice and I owned my home already which was amazing while I was getting started.
I attempted a move into a physical space which helped grow my business a little bit but I quickly went back home after 3 months, because early on it was not sustainable to have all the fees that came with having a physical space.
I slowly grew my business online and invested more in myself and in my business as my business grew. I reached out to experts to legally protect my business to make sure I was able to scale and ultimately to live.
But I was severely undercharging, as my friend who owns her business pointed out to me.
While there were great highs, there were also some lows where I reached out to my mom who generously offered to help me if I was ever in need of support. I can happily say that I haven’t had to take her on her offer for some time now.
I charged more; elevated the wellness experience my patients were receiving and found more balance in my life. I will say that I went full into my business without having any other side hustles or part-time jobs which definitely made it difficult when the low seasons of business came in the first year. I prepared and saved more for the year ahead, as I learned the ebbs and flows of which seasons I would get more patients and which seasons I would not be as busy. Since I write and create content for other companies, early on I was doing a lot of content creation which allowed me to sustain in the seasons where I was not as busy seeing patients.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media has been a game changer in my practice. Every patients I currently have, I met was through social media. I have been able to connect with other business professionals who have come to work with me and have referred me their clients.
With social media you can create an image of yourself that people will or will not connect with, you can be as real or as entertaining or as educational as you want. You can really connect with your ideal customer, learn from and grow with others.
I have collaborated with other business accounts in the virtual space; had the opportunity to be featured on blogs, podcasts, done live interviews and so much more.
As a small business who may want to keep their cost low when it comes to marketing, it’s important to remember that we are our best advertisers. Always show up as who you are and you will find your community. Without a social media following you can be successful, but without a community you can’t grow.
