We recently connected with Daisey Anglow and have shared our conversation below.
Daisey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The moment I decided to leave a very established practice to pursue the goals of owning my own business.
Fall 2019, I had the opportunity to join a renowned medical practice in the valley. It was known by many, but honestly not by me. When accolades came in of my new job I knew that it was something special that I was a part of.
As time went on, job demands changed, life changed and I changed. I did not see my change to be a positive one. Pandemic aside, my mental health was suffering and I found the need to hide how I was feeling to get the job done.
The problem with our society, especially in our medical community is the belief that we just have to get the job done often in spite of our own well-being. I refused to believe that this was my fate.
The thought of change never truly scared me, leaving my patients was definitely weighing heavy on my decision. What was also heavy was my heart, and my health was declining.
Fall 2020, I met my partner. Him also a doctor, I saw so much of how he strives to make work-life balance his priority. It made me understand that there is more to life than medicine.
As our relationship grew, I knew the chance of him leaving to work at another hospital outside of Arizona was a potential we could not avoid.
I craved success but more than ever I also was hungry for more opportunities and yes more balance in my life.
Fall 2021, I made the decision to leave my former practice. A risk many questioned, who leaves a business that is so thriving? The girl who wants more. More out of life, more out of medicine, more respect that I believe I so deserved.
Leaving meant finding a new office for patients who wanted to work with me and establishing a new path for my future patients. In creating a more work-life balanced schedule. I started to embrace working from home and creating my own schedule. It was not easy. I was so used to the routine of being expected to be at a certain place at all times that the freedom which I welcomed was met with a certain sense of uncertainty.
Did I do the right thing, what if I don’t get any patients, what if, what if.
I know, I am an excellent doctor.
As the week passed, patients from my former practice started to reach out to me, and suddenly I was booking out January with new and returning patients. I had time to write for magazines, made time to create content and videos, I was getting my life back and medicine which honestly I was starting to truly hate, I fell in love with again.
In my 3rd month of entrepreneurship, I can say that I have made some strides, I have new patients calling and booking weekly, I am working on a gut course, I was invited as an expert to do a 4 week webinar on women’s health and hormones and I am creating a self-care course with another naturopathic doctor. I have so many projects in the works
The doubts, the what ifs, the exhaustion has been replaced by true excitement about my work and my life again. A risk, well worth taken.
As my practice and my relationship grows, I have the opportunity to travel more and make time for my personal life as well as my business. I am in the process of doing my pilates certification to offer classes to my current patients as well as virtually.
I see an infinite world of possibilities that I did not see before. With hard work, dedication and a little bit of help from the universe I am truly where I need to be at this moment. I cannot wait to see what I do next.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
One fact that many may not know is that my first language is French. I grew up all over the world and my love from medicine stemmed from seeing so many different cultures and their challenges with access to healthcare, that I knew I wanted to be part of the change. I did not know early on what specific field of medicine I would strive for since there are so many ways to be involved in healthcare. I have 12 doctors in my family. All “MDs”. Choosing Naturopathic Medicine and being the first “ND” was straying off the path. Maybe an act of rebellion against our current health system. But it allows me to offer my patients the best of both worlds. I have the knowledge of plants, nutrition, Chinese medicine as well as the knowledge of our western world.
I wanted more than offering my patients drugs to cure their ailments. I work with them on balancing lifestyle, I counsel them on the best nutrition for their body type and their health needs. We do support the body with plants and supplements first, address imbalances with acupuncture, homeopathy and finally prescribe medication as needed. We run many functional medicine tests that offer us an ability to see our patients beyond a basic bloodwork and get more information to treat them as a whole. From gut health to hormone imbalances to weight issues. There are so many advanced tests that provide me answers to help my patients further. That’s why they come to me specifically. They want different. They have tried all the conventional meds, or supplements without success and need more guidance.
My approach with patients is more of holistic one. I treat the whole person, not just one symptom or one imbalance on a bloodwork.
I am proud that I have patients who fly in from Wyoming or drive hours from Las Vegas to see me. When I transitioned from a daily office rotation to doing fully virtual and concierge medicine, my practice grew even more. I have now the potential of consulting with Arizona locals, as well as other individuals in California, Ohio, or New York. I even have a patient who lives in Costa Rica who flies in regularly to see me to get labs done and get her supplements. It’s truly exhilarating.
It is a true gift that I have to be able to connect with so many through social media, providing good care and letting good “word of mouth” do the rest.
My brand is me. I live breath health and wellness and I transfer this passion into my job and into my patients. They know once they are patient, they are now part of my wellness warrior family. I am there every step of the way. The emails and text messages don’t stop. Whether it’s a quick question about which probiotic to buy at the local store while traveling when they forgot the one I prescribed home or a quick medication question. I am always prompt to answer their questions and give them a peace of mind. I want them to feel like their concerns are my concerns. I don’t ever want them to feel like they have been yet again ignored by a doctor and want them to have hope that with my help they will get better. And they surely do.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That I had to be a lot further in my business than I should be. Here’s the deal. When I started at my former practice, it look 6 months to even a year to get a new patient. So when I left to start my own business, I thought it would take less time to do accomplish what I had done the last 2 years. Not true.
I am starting over. It is slower then before and no, this business of mine is not 2 years old as the former practice that I built. I am building a new business. It is going to take some time and I have to learn to be patient in the process. As well, it was not a pandemic when I first started my practice 2 years ago. So much has changed that I have to adapt to and I am learning to give myself grace and enjoying the slower pace. I know in no times my business will boom again and I will be overbooked and busy again.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I truly believe in the gift of social media. Before I was even signed on to a medical practice I had a strong social media presence and people interested to work with me. I think with social media, you get what you put in. Unfortunately now, it is an oversaturated market with so many people calling themselves coaches, and healers with no true degree. However what is not oversaturated is your personality. No one is like me, no one can do it like me and that is what I learn to embrace. reject the fear of showing your face, reject the fear of I’m not good enough, pretty enough or just enough. I am and so are you. If you give good care or create a good product and follow through with honest work and fair prices, people will come. They come for me and I love that.
