We were lucky to catch up with Dain Kim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dain, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Even though it’s very hard to be a full-time artist sometimes, I never doubt my decision to have a career as a creator. When I’m going through a difficult time and lose all my confidence as a painter, I have asked myself: “Why did I choose such a difficult job?” It can be so lonely, and I have to take all the responsibility for whatever actions I make, even when I don’t really know if I’m doing the right thing. I’ve often felt that I don’t earn enough, compared to how much time, money, and effort that I put in. When I imagine myself having an office job and getting a paycheck every month, it seems very safe and might give me less trouble emotionally, but I know I would probably feel so trapped and dissatisfied after a few months. If I didn’t become a painter, I would still be doing creative work in a different field.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have loved to paint since I was a little girl. My mom was an art teacher and a painter, so I grew up in a creative and artistic environment. I studied design and fine art in the UK and South Korea, so I experienced two very different cultures. It was much easier to find my identity and connect with others through art, and when I create art, it feels like home. I try to create my art with a grounded intention to channel the vibrant, magical energy that I am inspired by, in the hope that it resonates with the audience. My work is primarily painting on canvas and digital art, but I also enjoy doing interactive art and collaborative work that allow me to connect directly with others.
After living and traveling in many different countries, my adaptation to new environments became intuitive. Recently moving from the urban megacity of Seoul KR to a semi-rural area in Raleigh NC, I aim to mirror the resilience and vitality of the natural world in deeper connection with myself and surroundings.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To be able to connect with the world visually. There is a magical element in the moments when you encounter certain works of art. There are many things in life that can’t be described in words, and somehow art has the power to make us feel deeply and communicate on a different level. I feel lucky and thankful that I’m able to express myself in a visual language.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly, it’s still my homework. I think people like to see consistent images from the artist. I try not to post any irrelevant content other than my art/inspirational images. I definitely get more “real followers” with offline connections. I think balancing between online & offline is the most efficient way to grow your followers in my experience.
