We were lucky to catch up with Dai Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dai, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
As a professional organizer, I found my real niche accidentally. While working as an corporate professional, entrepreneur not to mention managing a household with two young kids, life got busy. During the pandemic, I shifted my newly organizing business to serve clients virtually and was thriving but also inundated with digital assets and tech systems. I felt disorganized digitally as much as my clients were physically. I had the bright idea to find a way to fix that. I created a 4-step digital organizing process similar to my physical organizing process that was simple and could be applied to anyone. Most organizers are focused on the home and office organizing, but I focus more on helping your be more present, productive and profitable through digital organizing. This niche has been a need that we didn’t know we needed but can totally transform how you run your business or manage your day! I love learning new systems and teaching my clients how to streamline their processes in our virtual 4-hour W.E.R.K. Days, This has allowed me to carve a specific skill-set that is unique to Simplicity By Day.
Dai, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Modern Millennium Mompreneur. That’s who I am and honestly, who I aim to serve in business. As a self proclaimed “systems nerd” “recovering perfectionist” and admittedly the serial over-committer, I understand the NEED for order to keep my sanity and peace. If I am to attempt to maintaining everything I raise my had to do, be organized is a must.
I am always searching for better ways to do everything– from organizing my kitchen pantry to balancing my kids’ and professional calendar, so when I discovered professional organizing, I knew I’d found my lane. With 10+ years in marketing and strategy development as well as a passion for organizing, productivity and decor, I’m on a mission to create better solutions that work for working parents, entrepreneurs and everyone in between. I’m combining those experiences to help busy people, like myself… uncover ways to make their lives easier through Simple Organizing Solutions and create the home you love to live in,”
I remember working as a full-time professional, full-time mom and entrepreneur feeling overwhelmed with the amount of software and technology that I “needed” to run my business. I felt that although I need these systems to manage my business, I never really felt like I had a good grasp on how everything worked and if I truly need the systems that I invested in.
I realized that as a professional organizer, there must be a better way to stay digitally organized that didn’t require more time and money spent on the wrong systems. I developed a system for digital organizing, in the same way that I created a system for physical organization. As I begin working with more professionals and small business owners, I realized they also needed this as well! We are all inundated with technology and managing digital assets but we aren’t all tech-savvy and have the time, money or desire to figure it out. This is where I came in, using my 10+ years as a productivity and project management expert coupled with my work as a professional organizer, I am on a mission to help serve others who need to streamline their systems…for their business success and their sanity! I am committed to serving more business owners who want to be more present, productive and profitable in business.
This journey has been full of unexpected surprises, and challenges but I feel like I am truly walking in my divine path, living an authentic life, transforming others’ lives and this star student realizes that my energy and efforts towards creating excellence is all for serving others in their homes and businesses.
My business has truly opened doors and created amazing opportunities for me. Just about a year ago, I launched my first book, Your Home’s Love Language: Get Organized with the SIMPLE CARD Process. The launch coincided with my 35 birthday and was a huge celebration. The book launch and the success of the book was probably my biggest accomplishment because I was able to share this moment with my mom and sisters, my husband and kids and a small group of people who had been there for me through this journey. We also had friends and family join me via zoom to be apart of the event. It was so beautiful. I never knew how much of an impact I’d had had on others until that night when I heard them speak and congratulate me. It was such an humbling experience that I will cherish forever. I have since then wrote another book, a bestseller book and will be releasing another this year. Writing and publishing that book set precedence in my life and business to take drastic steps, be bold in my dreams and make sure to include my village and those that I truly care about along the way. Just recently I filmed my first television segment on an international network, NowMedia TV where I discuss all things Organizing & Productivity for business owners! This is such a huge accomplishment and I am proud to be able to speak more about my industry and passion to people across the globe.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Having a corporate job and excelling at it has made me somewhat complacent. I worked hard, don’t get me wrong the answers and resources were sometimes given to me or I know I had partners or managers who could help guide me because they’d been through a similar situation. Being a business owner and starting out by yourself as been just the opposite. Sure I have my husband/partner, and eventually network partners, mentors, and employees but at the end of the day, most decisions rely on my judgment and my instincts.
This was truly a new learning experience for me, being an Entrpreneur meant learning how to do things differently, being okay with not knowing ALL the answers before you move forward with an decision. I’ve learned that there will be times when I don’t have anyone I can turn to who knows exactly what I am facing and how to manage throw but I have to use what experience and knowledge I have to press forward. It take a new level of courage and tenacity that I didn’t experience in my corporate role but honestly, I have appreciated the lessons learned.
Have you ever had to pivot?
