We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DaGuyInBlack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DaGuyInBlack below.
Alright, DaGuyInBlack thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my recent projects HARVEST highlighted my experience leaving the military and returning home. Through the lyrics, cinematography, and even the beat i regurgitated the changes i was enduring. Leaving the military i was excited to come home to the life that i left behind. Only to return to a broken family and one close friend in the city. I felt like i was in a whirlwind of uncertainty and close relationships felt like strangers. Existence felt like a chore to please those few relationships left and not to upset anyone, a super low point in my life.

DaGuyInBlack, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started attempts at recording in 2018 when i finally acquired a third space(basement) to be able to craft without interferences. I didn’t feel very confident starting out. Trying to rap and being white i knew i didnt want to just talk about guns, money, and drugs over and over. I wanted lyrics that were for all ages too, coming from a strict christian household and extended family. I wasnt able to enjoy much hip hop (or much else) until i was a teenager for a few years due to the censorship from my upbringing. I often use my lyrics to produce lessons and stories through double entendres and duality. Occasionally sprinkling in any slang ive made up with for texture. Establishing my sound as a producer also came with its own challenges. I didnt wanna sound like anyone else, i wanted people to hear just the beat and say “Oh thats DGIB.” or “That guy, he’s good isn’t he?” I started out using loop samples in GarageBand in 2020 and in 2023 upgraded to Logic Pro. Im excited to use my new studio and new gear to continue honing my experience. Staying true to the heavy Boom Bap and Dubstep influences and possibly sprinkling some folk in? I dont know we’ll see

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think more public 3rd spaces are necessary with the disposable yet righteous society we reside in today.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish i wouldve known Logic Pro is a one time purchase, i thought all DAWs were subscriptions. Also look into distribution companies for independent artists, its never too early to post your art.
