Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dagm Endalkachew. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dagm, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Music has a funny way of making an impact on you. A song you heard at Starbucks, a DJ playing a private underground show, or a vinyl record you randomly picked can all change your life forever. I was living in Boulder, Colorado when I first heard the sounds of electronic music producer and DJ, Flume, for the first time and little did I know it would carve the path I’m on today.
At the time, I had recently withdrew from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, and had moved to Colorado to chase my dream of enrolling at the University of Colorado at Boulder. University was expensive and so I didn’t enroll. Rather, I worked several jobs to support myself. At the time, I had just gotten my bearings under me. I had been DJing for less than a year. My only experience had been college parties and playing for my friends in our college dorms.
I had discovered Flume, while at a friends eating pizza and listening to songs that were suggested to us via Youtube. When I heard his music, it opened me up to a world of sounds I hadn’t been privy to before. It was from the first moment I had heard Flume that I knew music meant more to me than it had before. Listening to music and attending shows wasn’t going to satisfy the new found passion for what I felt. Creating an experience only music can. My passion for DJing and music was just beginning to grow. I would go on to travel the East and West coast performing as support for Hip Hop icons like Rick Ross, R&B artists like Sevyn Streeter, and DJing tour dates for future bass titan, INZO.
Dagm, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dagm and I’m from Baltimore, MD currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. I’ve been fortunate enough to do what I love and that’s playing music for crowds across the United States. I’m a DJ and music producer with a passion for lighting up the dancefloor with original tracks, remixes, and classics. In college, an upperclassmen took me under his wing and made me welcome onto my new campus. We became friends because I lived in his freshman dorm when he was also a freshman. Before graduating (Alex was his name), he gifted me my first DJ controller. I would go on to play all of my beginning events with it before moving to Colorado where I found my musical journey was just beginning.
My parents are immigrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea. When they weren’t playing music from back home, Michael Jackson was their favorite artist and his music too grew on me at an early age. In high school, I didn’t quite fit in and hung out with some of the fringe groups. at 14 I was exposed to different subgenres of metal music and would go on to attend my first concert that year at the Ottobar, a legendary Rock venue in Baltimore (little did I know I was going to have my own DJ residency there exactly 10 years later).
In college, hip hop quickly became my norm as a lot of my friends played it and it was the soundtrack to every college party. I started exploring the genre in college as I became a fan of artists like A$AP Rocky, Casey Veggies, and Waka Flocka Flame.
Colorado introduced me to the world of electronic dance music and the rest is history. I knew I wanted to travel and play music and I’m blessed to do that. Today I focus primarily on producing Future Bass, Dubstep, Reggaeton, and beats for artists I work with around the globe.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I genuinely believe music has the power to help people heal. I was going through a traumatic time in my life when I was living in Colorado in 2013-14. The music I discovered then that would go on to help me become who I am today, first helped me overcome current trials I was facing in my life being a homeless teen at 18 years old 1,600 miles away from home. I found music that helped me and also inspired me to create as well. Since then, it’s been my goal to make music and help get it to as many people as possible. Music has the power to help people heal, to forgive, and to grow. All I hope for in this life is that I can help one person with my music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The reward for me is seeing the smiling faces across from the DJ booth as partygoers are singing along to their favorite song or getting down to a classic they haven’t heard in ages. A lot of us are hardworking people and we deserve to reward ourselves whether it’s a night on the town or a night in. It’s a privilege for me to be a DJ and be one of the highlights of someone’s entire week. I enjoy helping people get the reset they need before going back to grind on Monday.
