Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dafney Tales-Lafortune. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dafney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
We are dedicated to shifting the narrative and perception of Haiti and the Haitian people and culture. With one plate at a time, we strive to introduce people to the love, warmth and fierce passion that Haitians live by. We are hospitable and we don’t feel comfortable until we feel you have been fed properly. That is what we want – by falling in love with our food, you can fall in love with who we truly are and not what a one-sided media narrative tells you who we are.

Dafney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a husband and wife team behind the first Haitian food truck in Central North Carolina. We founded our business because we wanted to share our cuisine and culture with this great state. There are so many people who don’t know much about Haiti and Haitians other than what flashes across their screens. But, that does not begin to scratch the surface with sharing who we are as a proud, resilient and passionate people.
We figured what better way to promote who we are than through our food? Haitians take our cuisine very seriously. It is a complex and lengthy process to cook our food. But, we do it with love because we know through that plate, you can see us. We decided to focus on serving Fritay (pronounced fwee-tie) which is our street food. It is the most down-to-earth and authentic as you will get when it comes to our cuisine. We take pride in bringing the essence of Haiti’s street food scene to the Carolinas.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We believe what helped build our reputation was our customer service, professionalism and food. We strive to be as helpful as possible and anticipate our customers’ need. We embrace any and everybody who comes to our window. Once you’ve been to our food truck, we see you as family.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Well, that’s simple. We’re married! And, thankfully, we are on the same page in terms of owning our own business and promoting our shared culture.
