We were lucky to catch up with Daesha Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daesha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Good question! I don’t really feel like this is too far fetched but I will say that I have an “All or Nothing” mindset, especially when it comes to my passion. Some may think it’s extreme but I don’t believe in plan B’s or C’s. I truly believe that I can do whatever I choose to do and no one can tell me differently. Even if a door doesn’t open, I can always go through a window; and if the window is boarded, I can always build something new.

Daesha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daesha Smith, if we’re close enough some call me Dae. Professionally I am known as a graphic designer and illustrator located here in Atlanta, but I never want to put a cap on what I can do. Since the last time we spoke I’ve ventured into motion design, animation and recently 3-D design. I’d like to consider myself a “visual aid” or creative problem solver; most times when people contact me for services they either have an idea of what they’re looking to execute or they aren’t sure at all. It is my task to assist them in bringing their concepts to fruition, and if needed help guide their project or brand by giving insight about what I’ve learned thus far. So far, I am most proud of my growth both personally and professionally and I am looking forward to what’s next.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s the freedom for me! No, really – it truly is. Outside of completing a project, I would have to say that I enjoy the freedom and the process of creating the most. I love being able to build, draw, paint, shoot, tag whatever I’m feeling whenever I’m feeling it; there’s nothing in the world like it! It’s almost like a superpower.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Like most people, we’ve all suffered some type of loss, right? Well my first loss came in the form of my aunt passing away, five days before my birthday during the summer before my senior year of high school. She wasn’t just any aunt, she was my favorite one. (Yes, I know they say we aren’t supposed to have favorites in family but we all do). It was random, it was sudden and I didn’t understand it. I couldn’t imagine one of my biggest supporters not being present for my future but it was now my reality and something that I had to face head on. That’s when I feel like I begin to learn how to feel things, accept things and move forward. That’s true resilience to me, not necessarily how much you can endure or how quickly you can bounce back from what has happened to you but what you choose to do afterwards. I choose to keep going, keep learning, keep creating.
