We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daemon Hillin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daemon , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
“Every minute of every day as a producer involves risk. Whether it’s navigating physical production, securing financing, or strategizing distribution, each phase presents its own challenges. The key to managing these risks lies in having the knowledge and expertise to hedge against them. Mitigation and crisis management are my strengths, and I’ve honed my ability to handle them effectively. It’s not about avoiding risk but understanding how to face it head-on with the right tools and strategies.”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
“I’m a self-taught, tenacious individual who found my way into producing through determination and passion. I’ve developed a set of natural abilities that help me navigate the fast-paced and unpredictable world of indie filmmaking. Coming from a background in real estate and finance, I was able to apply that knowledge to independent film financing, giving me a strong foundation. What I’m most proud of is my resilience — no matter the challenges, I know how to get back up when I’m knocked down, and I always come back stronger.”

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
“A crucial resource for anyone entering the film industry, no matter the position, is finding a mentor. Having someone experienced to guide you can make all the difference. Equally important is making sure you truly love what you’re doing and that you’re pursuing it for the right reasons. Passion and purpose are what will carry you through the inevitable challenges.”

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
“The hardest challenge in the film industry is finding the right balance between creativity and business. People often have incredible, beautiful ideas, but without the ability to sell or secure the right talent, those visions may never come to life. It’s a constant dance between creative ambition and practical execution, and mastering that balance is key to success.”
