Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daemon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Daemon, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have been quietly working on an album for the past five years. I’ve released mixtapes, EPs, and singles aplenty, but never an album. There’s so much I want to say and so many different ways I need to express myself that it has to be done just right. I also have to make sure there’s an actual audience in wait before I can release this thing into the world, but we’re almost ready. Have you ever felt like your entire life is building up to one specific moment? No? What’s wrong with you? Ain’t you seen a movie? That’s how life works! In all seriousness, I hope with every fiber of my being that some things will fall into place to allow me to deliver this album, not just to the folks who rock with me now (thank God for each and every one of you), but to the entire world. Steve, Adrian, my team at Breakfast., my publisher, Third Side Music, and the whole crew of incredible artists that rock with me have helped mold something truly unique with this record. Now, all we need is…let’s say, $100k…and a couple of crucial connections, and we will leave an indelible mark on the culture. I can feel it in my bones. Euphonic will be here soon.
Daemon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daemon, and I am a rapper-songwriter by trade (think: singer-songwriter, but I can’t sing). Thanks to Third Side Music and a lot of luck, I write and produce music for publishing. I lived in Los Angeles, where I wrote a song called “Yeah.” The track sampled the legendary Galt MacDermot. When he passed, his family permitted Third Side to represent his music in the licensing and sync world (at least, I think that’s how it works; don’t quote me on that – I’m a rapper-songwriter, not a businessman…you’re thinking of Jay-Z). Somehow, someway, my song ended up in the possession of TSM.
Meanwhile, I suffered an injury at work, lost my job and my apartment, and was forced to move back home. I thought my life was over until I got an email from the head of creative at Third Side. They heard “Yeah,” loved it, and wanted to know more about me. Fast forward to today, I have had my music placed everywhere, from Xbox games to Adidas commercials, Netflix to network television.
Now, I aim to take all the hard work, goodwill, and opportunities given to me because of Third Side and leave a lasting cultural impact on Hip Hop music. It’s everything to me. I’ve dedicated my life to it. I want the world to rap along with me.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Here’s a lesson I have to unlearn continuously—AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH….did I say a month? More like twice a week.
IT’S. NOT. ABOUT. YOU.
You see it all of the time. Social media accounts that post content but don’t like, comment, share, or save anyone else’s work. People who don’t follow anyone! No one! You mean to tell me there’s nothing anyone else is doing that you find interesting?
You lame.
We’ve convinced ourselves that everyone else is an NPC, and the only reason we lack engagement is because the algorithm, but the truth is much messier. Do the algorithms suck? Most definitely, but worse still is human apathy. Selfishness. How many times as a creative have I logged onto a social media site, posted my “content for the day,” and ghosted? More times than I’d care to admit. Now, I make it my mission whenever I feel like my reel didn’t get enough love or my new single has been ignored; I turn that insecurity inside out and focus my energy on showing other people the love I want for myself. It’s a reminder that it’s not about me. It’s about us. Build a community, not simply because you want attention but because you see your wants and needs as almost universal truths. You’re not the only person who feels alone, misunderstood, and unappreciated. Make sure to take care of others, and eventually, you will find yourself fulfilled in a way that all the social media clout in the world could never do. Show love. It’s contagious.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFTs still got ya’ll tweaking, huh?
I thought we had moved past this internets, smh.
Here’s my thing with NFTs. I’m not smart enough to understand them. Okay, maybe it’s unfair to judge my intellect solely based on the fact that whenever someone tries to explain to me what an NFT is, my eyes gloss over. As the saying goes, you don’t judge a fish cuz it can’t climb a tree.
BUT even Finding Nemo over here knew something was off about them things from the jump. And again, FISH CAN’T JUMP SO WHO’S THE IDIOT NOW, LOGAN PAUL?
Ahem….sorry for yelling. I don’t know anything about NFTs except that from the very first moment someone told me about them, my inner King Shark told me to swim in the opposite direction.
