Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dae’Mhun Fuller . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dae’Mhun , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Growing up in Liberty City, there weren’t many ways to make it out successfully. All I knew at the time was sports. My friends and others around me had either decided to make music or make their money through affiliation of the wrong crowds. To me, the best way out and perhaps the safest was to devote my life to football. I had become obsessed and forced myself to train to be the best I could be. By my junior year of high school, I was recruited by multiple D1 schools. I felt like I had the gift that others were only praying for. However, life happens and the realization that I wasn’t going to make it to the NFL had hit me by sophomore year of college. Up until then, my life revolved around football and suddenly it didn’t. It was at this point in my life when I needed to find other ways to make something of myself. The last thing I wanted to do was go back and associate with people who would only get in the way of my success. The only other thing I knew in this world other than football was clothes. While I may not have known it at the time, I was always conscious of the way I looked and represented myself. So, I went to the drawing board and worked hard to create my own fashion line. I wanted to make something that I was unknowingly passionate about and turn it into a business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Fashion has always been something that I was passionate about even if I didn’t know it. As a kid I would take my old jeans and cut them up and make them into something that no other kid on the block had. As mentioned before, it always seemed as though our options to make it out of our current lifestyle was limited. For most of my life, I put fashion to the side and let football take the front seat. When things stopped working out, I hesitated with the idea of pursuing fashion. I started small by drafting images, logos, and designs. I eventually learned different techniques and was screen printing shirts for myself. This was the time in which I came up with the idea for my logo. The “broken heart” is for people who go through what it seems like impossible times. Like many of us, we don’t show that emotional side of us to others and we move on from our pain in silence. This logo gives us a chance to show our heart outside of one’s chest. I received such positive feedback from my peers regarding the t-shirts and the meaning behind it that it encouraged me to sell them to those who wanted it. What sets DAE’WEAR apart from other companies is my own personal passion and drive to improve my craft. I’m not doing this for the money and the sales, the true drive behind DAE’WEAR is to see how many hearts we can touch.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing my clothes worn by other’s. When you create a business, the first people who want to support you are your friends and family. You truly know when your product means something when random people start wearing your clothes and posting pictures with them online. The idea of someone waking up and deciding to wear my clothes for the day is the biggest reward in what I do. I also thoroughly enjoy watching the visions I have in my head come to real life. It can start with something simple like sketching out an idea, photoshopping, color shifting, or pattern making. However, when that final product comes together exactly how I pictured it in my mind it only encourages me to keep on going.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The biggest thing I learned from my own personal journey is that only you can see your vision. Nothing comes easy, and nothing is handed to you. I also learned to appreciate the small wins because often you lose big battles. While you may believe that your own brand will be the best in the world; you must earn your place to get there. Do not be afraid to fail because you will, and it’s those who do not get discouraged from that failure that end up being the best. I thought that when I created my own brand it would instantly be a success. It took due diligence to understand my own market and I had to show face in areas I was unfamiliar with. I had to learn to fall in love with being uncomfortable because nothing goods comes with staying in your comfort zone.
