We were lucky to catch up with Dae Smooth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dae, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my current E.P. It means a lot to me because it will be my first ever complete body of work. I’ve been making music about 6 years and have only released a couple of singles. It was hard doing everything for myself as an artist specifically funding studio time , beats, mixing and mastering, and promo while also being a full time student at that time. Now I finally feel ready to put a project out because I’ve been able to gather more resources and make more connections. On top of the financial piece of creating music I also realized that it was necessary for me to create a team of people that can help me along my journey. I’ve been able to cultivate connections with videographers, promoters, producers, photographers, engineers. This has really helped me realize that it truly takes a village to be successful.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an independent artist . I sing, rap and do poetry. I started making music as a form of release and expression in my early childhood. I began to pursue music full fledged in my freshman year of college. I started by doing open mics just to get comfortable with my voice and test out my material.
I offer performances for private events, showcases, weddings and more. I provide writing services, jingles/ theme songs , voice overs and I also offer mentor-ship/development for new artists.
I am most proud of the style of music I make it truly sets me apart from the stigma that follows so many women in music. My style can be described as neo soul and hip hop. It’s very lyrical , relatable and melodic. I write a lot of my music in 3rd person using a lot of terms like me and I so that when people are listening their speaking those good vibrations from my lyrics to their spirits. I make music that uplifts and empowers people especially black women.
I take my music very personal and do my very best to put out good quality vibes.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is having strangers tell me how my music makes them feel. I try my best to make meaningful music and to have people recognize the small details of your work is always so awesome. I remember one of my Facebook friends who I never met sent me a DM and told me she had my song highs & lows on her meditation playlist. It was so heartwarming that people find peace and comfort in my art .

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Something society can do to support artists is treat them like your favorite mainstream artist. Repost their music , add it to your favorite playlist or social media posts, buy their merch, attend their shows and buy their art. I think it’s important to keep in mind how that support can go a long way. A lot of artist just need the right exposure to help them elevate themselves to the next level.
