We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DADA SOULFACE . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DADA below.
Hi DADA, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
In 1998 my good friend Paul Sigwerth invited me up share an art studio with a group of artists he knew. The studio would be my teacher thru my contact with other artists and the books that were left behind by past artists in the space. This is where I would discover the art movement DADAISM. Dadaism is an art movement that emerged in Europe in the early 20th century, before surrealism. It was characterized by deliberate irrationality and negation of traditional artistic values, and it used various media, including collage, sound poetry, cut-up writing, and sculpture. Dadaist artists expressed their discontent toward violence, war, and nationalism. After declaring myself an Afrodadaist. I worked on my craft constantly and insistently until I knew I had a brand and a style of my own.

DADA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My government name is Bryan Danial Joseph I was born and raised in the little big city of Aurora,IL . And I am an artist. I’ve always had a need to express myself through drawing, writing , noise. Around 1998 about the time my first daughter was born. I started to get serious about my artistic abilities. During this period I would study, create, and formulate my own brand: DADASOULFACE. I started doing diy pop up art shows with friends and have been showing in galleries, bars, cafes, and wherever I can since then. I specifically use collage and mixed media as my main techniques of expression.
My work references and taps into the subcultures I was raised up on…from HipHop, punk rock, and skateboarding.
My art pieces usually touch upon the subjects of race, sexuality, class, and the general human experience lived through these eyes of mine.
I have done album covers for a handful of record labels throughout the past few years. Special big up’s to my people over at CulturePower45
( www.culturepower45.com )
I do commissions for those that want something more than superheroes or corny cartoons on their walls. My work is for those that want art pieces that are conversation starters and intellectual provocations to be represented on their walls.
My latest venture is delving into designing and printing wearable art; AKA graphic t-shirts with my man Abel “Rez” Ramirez ( www.inkbartattoo.com )
I want to bring a little bit of surreality to the street wear game. My specific Tee brand is DSF Pro Wear. We use the Direct to Film method of printing because it’s more durable and detailed than screen printing or the direct to garment methods.
You can go to my IG page and order a shirt directly. @dadasoulface

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is that I love to blow people’s minds. I enjoy the conversations that are started from my work. I like the many different reactions to my work. Sometimes I like to shock but I really enjoy making people think outside of their own intellectual boxes. That’s where the magic is.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
You can support us by BUYING from US!!! You can support us by sharing our stories and artworks. You can support by showing up to artshows with friends. We are out here with unpaid bills too.
