We caught up with the brilliant and insightful D. R. Sara a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
D. R., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I’ve often contemplated this question, and it’s a reflection of the duality that comes with being a business owner. There have certainly been moments when I’ve questioned whether I’d be happier with a regular job, but each time, I’ve emerged with a deeper understanding of my entrepreneurial spirit.
The most recent instance that comes to mind was during a particularly challenging phase in my second startup, the social media and e-commerce company. We were facing fierce competition, and the pressure was mounting. I remember sitting in my office late at night, poring over financial reports, and contemplating what it might be like to have a 9-to-5 job with predictable hours and a steady paycheck.
As I sat there, I started to imagine what a “regular job” might entail—the stability, the comfort of not constantly being on the edge, and the ability to clock out at the end of the day. But, as I delved deeper into this thought process, I realized that the very aspects of entrepreneurship that had initially drawn me in were the same ones that would ultimately keep me from choosing a conventional job.
I thought about the freedom to pursue my vision, the ability to shape my own destiny, and the thrill of building something from scratch. While a regular job could offer financial security, it couldn’t provide the same sense of purpose and ownership. It was during this introspective moment that I reaffirmed my commitment to entrepreneurship.
I recognized that being a business owner is not just a job; it’s a way of life. It’s about embracing challenges, taking calculated risks, and having the tenacity to push through even when the going gets tough. My conclusion was that I am happiest when I’m creating, innovating, and making a real impact on the world. That realization, coupled with my unwavering passion for what I do, made it clear to me that I’m meant to be an entrepreneur.
So, while I occasionally entertain the idea of a “regular job” during moments of stress or uncertainty, I always come back to the conclusion that entrepreneurship is where I belong. It’s not just a career; it’s a calling that resonates with my core values and aspirations. The joy I derive from building, mentoring, and innovating in the startup world far outweighs any fleeting thoughts of an alternative path.

D. R., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Certainly, I’d be happy to introduce myself to your readers. My journey into entrepreneurship has been a dynamic one, shaped by my passion for innovation, problem-solving, and a deep desire to make a positive impact in the world.
I am a three-time founder with a track record of building successful businesses, and I bring over 17 years of professional experience in entrepreneurship, strategic management, and operational leadership to my roles. My entrepreneurial journey began with a background in nanotechnology and consulting, serving industries such as Aerospace, Automotive, and Defense. In this first venture, my team and I focused on developing new materials and providing critical solutions for our clients, which had a profound impact on their businesses.
My first exit came from this nanotechnology and consulting company. We played a pivotal role in helping clients in highly technical and demanding industries innovate and thrive. The satisfaction of solving complex problems and witnessing the tangible results was incredibly rewarding.
In my second venture, I transitioned into the world of social media and ecommerce. We created a unique platform that connected millennials and college students with small ecommerce stores, creating a social media-like environment through a mobile app. This endeavor also achieved a successful exit, and it was a testament to my ability to pivot and adapt to changing market trends.
Today, I am the founder and CEO of an innovative artificial intelligence and blockchain company called Vidamonti. Our mission is to democratize ecommerce data, information, and ownership to foster open innovation worldwide. We are dedicated to building products, offering services, and developing technologies that create a symbiotic singularity in the ecommerce space. This singularity benefits consumers, creators, developers, and businesses alike, fostering strong communities, advancing technology, and making the world a better place for all.
What sets me apart in the entrepreneurial landscape is my unwavering commitment to open innovation, a data-driven approach, and a strong sense of empathy. I pride myself on being a visionary leader who excels at taking ideas from their infancy and scaling them, often with limited resources. I have a unique ability to understand and empathize with people, maximizing their performance and serving as a skilled mentor to guide them to success.
I am most proud of my ability to identify new opportunities and sustain business growth across diverse industries. My work is a testament to the power of relentless determination, a pro-active approach, and the capacity to innovate and adapt. I aspire to create a lasting legacy of positive change through my current venture, which aims to transform the ecommerce landscape and empower people worldwide.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is driven by a passion for innovation, a deep commitment to making a difference, and an unwavering belief in the power of open innovation. I invite you to join me on this journey of transforming the ecommerce landscape, fostering strong communities, and advancing technology for the betterment of all. Together, we can create a world where innovation knows no boundaries and where data, information and ownership are democratized for the benefit of everyone.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Growing one’s clientele is a crucial aspect of any business, and it often requires a multifaceted approach. Over my years as an entrepreneur, I’ve found several strategies to be highly effective in expanding my client base:
1. Exceptional Product or Service: The foundation of client growth is delivering an exceptional product or service. Quality is your best marketing tool. When your current clients are delighted with what you offer, they become your advocates and help attract new clients through word of mouth.
2. Networking and Relationship Building: Building strong relationships within your industry and related fields can open doors to new clientele. Attend industry events and conferences and join professional organizations. Personal connections often lead to referrals and collaborations.
3. Content Marketing: Sharing valuable content through blogs, articles, videos, or social media helps showcase your expertise and draw potential clients to your business. Content marketing establishes you as a thought leader in your industry.
4. Digital Marketing: Use digital marketing channels like Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and social media marketing to reach a wider audience. Targeted online advertising can bring in potential clients who are actively searching for your product or service.
5. Referral Programs: Implement referral programs that incentivize existing clients to refer new clients. Rewards, discounts, or exclusive access to certain features can motivate your current clientele to help you expand.
6. Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with other businesses that complement your offerings. These partnerships can introduce your services to a new audience. For example, if you provide graphic design services, partnering with a web development agency can be mutually beneficial.
7. Cold Outreach: Don’t shy away from direct outreach. Identify potential clients or businesses that could benefit from your services and reach out to them. Craft personalized, compelling pitches to grab their attention.
8. Leverage Reviews and Testimonials: Positive reviews and testimonials from satisfied clients can build trust with potential clients. Encourage happy clients to share their experiences and feedback on platforms like Google, Yelp, or your website.
9. Niche Targeting: Define your niche and become an expert in that area. When you specialize, it’s often easier to reach and attract clients who are specifically looking for your expertise.
10. Continuous Learning: Stay up to date with industry trends and innovations. Being at the forefront of your field makes you more attractive to clients looking for cutting-edge solutions.
11. Data-Driven Approach: Utilize data and analytics to refine your client acquisition strategies. By understanding what works and what doesn’t, you can optimize your efforts.
12. Customer Support and Retention: Providing excellent customer support and retaining existing clients is as important as acquiring new ones. Satisfied clients are more likely to refer others and continue doing business with you.
Remember that client growth is an ongoing process. Continuously assess the effectiveness of your strategies, adapt to changing market conditions, and maintain a customer-centric focus to ensure long-term success.

Any advice for managing a team?
Maintaining high morale within a team is paramount for sustainable success, and it’s something I’ve always prioritized throughout my entrepreneurial journey. Here are the principles I’ve found to be effective:
Strategic Leadership: First and foremost, strong and strategic leadership is crucial. Team members need a clear vision and a sense of direction. I’ve always believed in leading by example, setting a compelling vision, and outlining a roadmap for achieving our goals. When the team sees that I’m fully invested in our mission, it naturally boosts their enthusiasm and dedication.
Empathy and Understanding: Empathy is a powerful tool for understanding the unique needs and challenges of each team member. I’ve found that taking the time to listen, offering support, and recognizing individual contributions can do wonders for morale. In my experience, when team members feel heard and valued, their motivation and commitment rise significantly.
Effective Communication: Open and transparent communication is essential. Regular updates, feedback sessions, and ensuring that everyone is on the same page foster a sense of trust and belonging. When your team knows they can rely on you for information and guidance, they’re more likely to stay motivated and engaged.
Celebrate Success: Recognize and celebrate both small and big achievements. Acknowledging the hard work and dedication of your team can boost morale immensely. Whether it’s a shout-out in a meeting or a more formal recognition program, celebrating successes reinforces the importance of their contributions.
Encourage Innovation: Create an environment where team members feel free to share their innovative ideas. I’ve found that allowing space for creativity and innovation not only motivates the team but can also lead to groundbreaking solutions.
Invest in Professional Development: Supporting the growth and development of your team is vital. Providing opportunities for learning, training, and advancement can be a strong morale booster. When team members see that you are invested in their future, it creates a sense of loyalty and commitment.
Humble Leadership: It’s important to remember that leadership is a two-way street. I’ve always been open to learning from my team, valuing their input, and admitting when I don’t have all the answers. This humility builds trust and strengthens the team’s morale.
Maintaining high team morale is an ongoing effort, and it requires a combination of strategic leadership, empathy, effective communication, recognition, innovation, and professional development. When you prioritize these elements, your team is not just motivated; they become a force capable of achieving remarkable things.
