Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to D-Love Muzic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
D-Love , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned my skill set by first identifying my passion as a talent. Then, by working with mentors from various fields. These different creative outlets & opportunities served as educational courses. This in turn led to my career as a professional producer, music & technical director.
As for ways of speeding up the process. There are no shortcuts. Only learning & finding opportunities to put your talent to work.
The most essential skills I apply are, strong work ethic, professional communication skills & a strong knowledge base of my fields.
The main obstacles I can speak of would be limited resources growing up. There weren’t many programs in schools or in the community that encouraged art, music, or theater. Some local churches did offer programs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is D-Love. My company is D-Love Muzic. I’m a professional musician, producer, technical director & artist from Detroit, MI.
My career origin story begins with me playing bongos at my local church at age nine. By age fourteen I began playing for a Gospel recording artist. This would also begin my journey into understanding stage production, management & sound engineering. Along with being a musician, I would act in stage plays & also help with stage production & sound for the shows. This taught me behind the scenes knowledge that I continue to use to this day.
I would go on to learn many different styles & disciplines in the space were music, tech, art & performance meet. My ability to blend acoustic instrumentation with live electronic performance led to me working with award winning and nominated artists such as Salt n Pepa, Floetry, Algebra, Tonex a.k.a B-Slade, Eric Roberson, Anthony David, Karen Briggs, Waajeed, Zo! and Carmen Rodgers of The Foreign Exchange, Mike Ellison, SIAS, D.Cipher, Wanda Nero-Butler, Saxappeal, Ideeyah, LaShun Pace, Collective Peace, Eric Rainman Gaston, Sophiyah.E, Medusa, Kisma Jordan, L’Renee & The Ballet Detroit to name a few. I also perform solo shows & create live electronic, house & techno music under D-Love Muzic.
My company provides musical and/or technical services to artists, community spaces, creatives, corporations, festivals, universities, museums, charities, radio, TV, stage plays, movies, non-profits & government programs.
The problem I solve for my clients is being able to prepare a treatment or sequence of performances or duties to ensure a successful event, performance, creative space, concert, or academic presentation needed for any artist, company, or corporation.
What sets me apart from others in my field. It’s my ability to work with an ensemble, be a one-man band or run an artist entire show by myself. Learning onstage performance & behind the stage knowledge simultaneously, gives me an edge on how to think on my feet. To see a problem before it arises.
I’m extremely proud of the work I’ve done in the community. Being able to do clinics, performances & panel discussions with kids from elementary to the university level is very fulfilling.
The main thing I want people to take away from my interview is no matter where you start from, you can always make it to your goal. With focus, hard work & persistence you can be a winner. It might not always be easy but if you’re serious about it, you can accomplish anything. Just keep on making progress.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can value creativity by understanding we are small businesses. Many of us have gone to school or have done apprenticeships to learn this craft. We have expenses like any other business does. Just because you might not have heard of an artist or performer does not mean that they are unknown. You might not have discovered their art yet.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to change someone’s emotional state. Seeing someone you don’t know personally become invested in your performance is amazing. Making a genuine connection with a person over music you’ve created from scratch is an awesome feeling.
