We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful D. Kyrt Gates . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with D. Kyrt below.
D. Kyrt , appreciate you joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
It all started with a girl. In my 20’s I was working as a bartender, in a band as well working in the mall at a clothing store. I was dating this girl at the time whose parents thought I should be in college (it was almost a requirement to date their daughter) so I looked for something that wasn’t going to take a long time, so I chose “Medical Assistant.”
It wasn’t until 16 years later I used these qualifications when I answered an ad for a Medical Assistant at Bosley Medical a “Hair Transplant” clinic in New Orleans, La. I thought, cool I’ll take some temperatures, blood pressure, that sort of thing, nope I went straight into assisting in hair transplant surgeries and dissecting and implanting hair follicles into patients, this was a strange step coming from the music, film and art world!
There came a point when they asked if I wanted to train for Scalp Micropigmentation or “SMP” for short. It was a new (in The United States) form of hair loss treatment involving tattoo equipment. At the time my best friend had just opened a Tattoo shop so I thought it would be nice doing something similar to connect with my friend, so I did it.
I trained with Bosley as well as two other companies after leaving my position as Medical Assistant to focus on SMP full time!
I needed a place to set up shop, so I looked for a place my services would fit in, either a barber shop or a tattoo clinic and I found a home in the latter. One of the first places I walked into, “Rougarou Collective” in Ponchatoula, La welcomed me with open arms.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the business due to a number of strange doors opening before me. One minute I’m playing in a band the next giving advice on hair loss and turning back the hands of time for my clients by tattooing tiny hair follicle replicas across their scalps!
I’m very OCD about what I do and I care a great deal about these wonderful people who trust in me to help them.
We only treat one client per day because we want the only focus to be on them!
I think what sets us apart from other clinics and practitioners is that we treat our clients like family by providing all aspects of treatments available to them, not only by us but what is most beneficial to them.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner and I met years ago. She became very interested in this industry and before long she was doing all the consultations. She is now (at the time of this article) an SMP Practitioner in training.
Be both have a passion for this work and really enjoy what we do.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The work speaks for itself!
