Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cynthia Sorto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Cynthia, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Since we received my son’s autism diagnosis, right when the pandemic started everything closed and we didn’t know what to do… I felt helpless… I had to bury the image and dreams of what I had for him and embrace this reality that was completely new to me and my family and just focus on keep moving forward. I only knew that I wanted to be part or even better build something to support the neurodiverse community to embrace who they are and educate people about the way we process the information.
Cynthia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I never imagined that not long after we received my son’s diagnosis of autism (after several tests, and assessments) I qas going to receive my own diagnosis… I learned that I have ADHD/ADD and all the things that made me grow up feeling like an outsider in my own environment, finally for the first time began to make sense. I learned that just like me, there are millions of people going around the world without a diagnosis, because of this most of us grew up believing that something was wrong with us, most of the time we are judged by our reactions and the way we process everything, most of us struggle with mental health problems caused by the lack of education regarding the subject and I decided that it was time to share my way of feeling and seeing the colors of the world through my eyes and try to reach people hearts through my art.
I started altering some items with clay and little by little people asked me for commissions. When I came to realize, (and thanks to my hyper-fixation) I was already creating jewelry accessories, pet portraits, hair barrettes, painting shoes, jackets, and turning my designs, sculptures and characters into fashion items, clothing, home decor and accessories. I work with people ideas to create sculptures of their family, pets, make drawings and designs to collaborate with other small businesses and create accessories that help each other grow. I make so many different things, from jewelry inspired in succulents, sculptures, fantasy & whimsical accessories that go from fairies, mermaids, etc. as well as hand painted items like bookmarks, frames, home decor, wearable art, inspired in the colorful side of the Mexican Folk Art and Mayan Culture, including sugar skulls, alebrijes, pre-Hispanic Mexican legends and other icons of my culture.
And because representation really matters, I am also creating clothing and stickers to raise awareness and acceptance for the neurodiverse community. It’s important to mention that a percentage of any purchases from my products will be donated to different non profit organizations that support the neurodivergent community, because it’s really important for my family and many individuals to be a voice for our children and those that can’t speak for themselves, because autism research is essential to better understand people with autism, meet their needs, and provide them with the highest quality of life possible, donations help support a number of programs including scholarships, the “Hire Autism” portal for encouraging employers to hire adults with autism, and various programs and resources for autistic self-advocates.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The recognition and support of my community, the smiles when they see any of my products and how they identify with them as well as my customers when they purchase any of my products and comments about my colorful sculptures and artwork, the encouragement of my supporters to continue creating and start with workshops, the fact that someone wants to learn from me really touch my heart and encourage me to keep moving forward and keep learning to create more.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In this journey, my family plays a very important role, my husband, my children and my mother are my encouragement and my reason to continue. I have also found incredibly and talented people who are full of light, eager to grow and always willing to give you a hand, some advice, and that extra push we all need whether we are neurodivergent or not. Thanks to them I learned that I don’t owe explanations to anyone, nobody has any power over me, I understood that I came to this world to live my only life and I want to make something significant out of it, maybe I can’t change the world, but I can manage to sow a small seed for my children to live in a more compassionate and conscious one.
