We recently connected with Cynthia Soe and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Cynthia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
In my journey of discovering my passion in the art field, I embraced a lot of trial and error. I had a deep desire to build a career around creating and telling stories. I’ve come to realize that there’s no fast track in honing my craft. Every mistake is a lesson for me as these ultimately contributed to my growth. Consistency is one of the most important qualities that defines a great artist. This drives me to persevere through challenges and stay dedicated to my art. A big obstacle that I am overcoming is imposter syndrome, doubting my own abilities and wondering if I am truly good enough has always been my biggest enemy. I am continuing to build confidence in my work and to continuously learn as I do so. There’s always something new to discover, skills to refine, and fresh perspectives to gain.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a creative specializing in motion design, illustration, and animation. I work in the advertising and entertainment industry. My journey began with a BFA in Animation from California College of the Arts, and I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Motion Media Design at Savannah College of Art and Design. My work is a fusion of captivating visuals that narrate stories. I collaborate with brands to convey their message through compelling motion design, while my animation brings their stories to life. What sets me apart is my meticulous attention to detail. I take particular pride in my resilience, turning project challenges into opportunities for growth. With every stroke and frame, I aim to evoke emotion and dedicate myself to the art of storytelling.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In the society I grew up in, individuals outside the artistic field often held a dismissive view of those pursuing a creative path. While this mindset has been gradually changing, it’s important to emphasize that creatives work just as diligently as those in other professions. Throughout my journey, I’ve had an internal challenge of balancing my pursuit of perfection with trying to meet deadlines and make progress. This often leads to numerous revisions and iterations. Furthermore, the emotional investment poured into a creative work can be emotionally exhausting. It’s a continuous struggle to create your imaginations and share them with the world. Yet, this is the journey that fuels my passion as a creative.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is the privilege to pursue my passion and receive support from a community of like-minded individuals. It is a wonderful feeling to gain guidance and inspiration from other artists while offering mine to them. The greatest joy for me is the ability to connect with others through my art, knowing that they resonate with and understand the emotions I express. The sense of community within the artistic world is invaluable and I hope we can all grow together.
