We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cynthia Royer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
June 18, 2014, the day before Father’s Day, a phone call I will never forget. I got call from my cousin that morning, while I was at work, telling me that my father committed suicide. My father took the life of my grandmother (his mother) and my uncle (his brother-in-law) and then took his own life. A day I never saw coming. I lost the three people closest to me all at once.
I was quiet about my family passing and testimony for four years because I was embarrassed and ashamed. Suicide, taking the life of your family, and mental health was unheard of in our community, especially in the Haitian culture. It was a grief I had to deal with on my own because my remaining family abandoned me due to what my father did. And I had to bury my dad on my own. I had no parts in any of it, but I was treated as the culprit.
My tragedy made me turn that pain into power, it turned that hurt into something bigger than me, that now helps people around the world. I never thought my journey would have led me to be an Entrepreneur/Business Owner. Everything my dad taught me about health, wellness, fitness, fashion, and living a holistic lifestyle is what I used to help me fight my depression. These methods are now incorporated in my coaching to guide others through life whether tough times or not.

Cynthia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Working out, being outdoors in nature, and being active is something me and my dad did a lot. He introduced me to this lifestyle since I was a kid. I didn’t spend time behind the TV. I was always outdoors bonding with my dad. I never played any actual sports for a team because we didn’t have the financial means, but he made sure I had every equipment. We played at any local park, like Tennis (his favorite), bike riding, baseball, you name it, we spent countless Daddy Daughter time. I didn’t know the importance of it then, I knew I was having fun with my favorite person.
My childhood bond with my dad turned my fun into funds. I had the answers to many people’s problem of getting fit and their diet. My community and people on social media were the ones who pushed me to be a Personal Trainer. Everyone saw my ability to motivate verbally and physically, they gravitated to my transparency of my trials and tribulations, and how resilient I have been through it all. I started my business as a Personal Trainer, but quickly turned into a Mental Health Advocate, Motivational Speaker, Athleisure Clothing Brand, Health and Wellness enthusiast, Business Consultant, Fitness Model, Contracted Barber Model. And now I make all natural Vegan products like cold pressed juices, all natural smoothies, Vegan Lip Balm, Vegan Body Soaps, and Vegan Meals.
What sets me apart and what makes me most proud is that every negative I have been through I used to fuel me and my business. In 2018 I finally came out my dad committing suicide and homicide. That was also the year I was sick for one whole year with no answers from doctors. I felt like I was literally dying, sacred to sleep thinking I would not wake up the next day. They did not know what was wrong with me, but they wanted to medicate me. By the grace of my father’s teachings, I refused medication and took matters into my own hands. I turned Vegan and never been sick again. I healed myself, I healed what doctors couldn’t and I am grateful to be alive to not only tell my story but show it daily and coach others that are suffering or just looking to live a healthier lifestyle.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being transparent no matter what people may think. I had many people tell me sharing my testimony is too heavy and that I should not. I am happy I listened to my spirit. I realized sharing my story was helping me heal, helping others heal, and makes us relatable. It now has become a staple in everything I do.
Many people think I cut my hair for a trend but that’s not the case. After losing my family, I was in search of something positive that would uplift me. I woke up one day, within the week of their passing, went to the hair salon and got my hair cut off. It was the most relieving feeling ever. I literally felt all the stress, the hurt, and pain escaping my body through my scalp. So when people ask will I ever grow my hair back, I tell them no because I do not want to grow back that part of my life where I was hiding behind my hair. I am now seen, heard, and advocating for those who need me as their guide.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Just being myself, no filter, not hiding my losses or flaws. I show up all natural physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. My missions is continuing to show people you can live a healthy, all natural, minimalistic lifestyle without compromising your peace, your happiness, nor your pockets. When you stop trying to be perfect or like the next person everything falls into place. We thrive better in environments where people are real, we see real, we hear real, we experience real. This is what inspires us and lets us know the industry needs our natural self. Your gift is in arms reach, you don’t have to spend a dime trying to be something or someone you are not. Use your gift. Be YOU!
