We recently connected with Cynthia Phillips and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
How did I come up with my name, very interesting story. I was putting on an event for my church, their first Women’s Tea Event and I took the lead on the decorations, when everything came together, my Bishop said, you have an act for this. Then I ponder on what he was saying, and when I looked back I did do my own wedding decoration. I really liked coming up with the vision and bringing that vision to life, it made me feel happy and felt like. I can do this. I start to think of a business name, where I wanted my last name to be a part of it. So, I came up with Perfection of Phillips with initial of POP, I thought of the popping of champagne bottle and the slogan is “Everything goes well with POP.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, my name is Cynthia Phillips, I am the baby of 6 sibling, I have one son and bonus son and I celebrated 10 years of marriage in August. I was born and raised in Richmond, VA and than moved to Maryland in 2013. The spark came alive when I did my first Women’s Tea Party for my church as I previously mention. I received so many compliments and encouraging words. After that I was asked to do a book launch party, baby shower, and birthday parties. I step out on faith. I started the Perfection of Phillips, LLC in 2017, because “Everything Goes Well With P.O.P”.
With solid foundation in customer service and management skills, I take pride in making my clients vision comes true. I do understanding the significance of capturing every detail is crucial. Clients can rest assured that their every need is being taken care of. The thing I think that set me apart is I do make my creation (centerpiece) by hand. During the covid period, everything stop, so I digress and started to think and asked God what do I suppose to do now to bring funds into the business. I took advantage of the time to learn how to sew. I brought my first sewing machine off of Facebook market place for $25.00. Then I looked into the embroidery. So, I brought my first embroidery machine off the same site. If I am going to take this to the next level. I needed to purchase a heavy-duty machine. So, I told my husband I want to purchase an embroidery machine. I purchase my first commercial embroider machine from Ricoma. This how I expanded my business to other services like embroidery, customize journals, passport covers with tags, candy wrappers, customize picture frames, t-shirts, and other creative ideas. No job is to big for me. LOL The thing I am most proud is taking chances and challenging myself. For instance like sewing, I never got the chance to take Home economics in school , so I took a bad situation and made it good, so I looked on google and learned the basic of sewing. And I never gave up (that is the Bryant in me). Seeing my creative side is something I truly find peaceful and awarding. This open up doors inside of me that I never knew I could or wanted to do. (I am really learning more about me (Cynthia).
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The answer to this question, I am still on my journey. All my life my parents instill in me if you want something out of life, you have to work for it. I purse many things in my life having my son in my mids 20s and still able to complete college with 3 degrees. I still found love in my mids 40, a good job, and being able to do this business on my time. I have a burning desire to be a successful businesswoman. I never wants to feel defeated in something that I believe it is for me. Every day, I challenge myself. Joel Olsten said it best ” A Setback is a Setup for a comeback”, and it stuck with me ever since. I keep striving no matter what I might face. It always easy to give up. I am learning this business by making mistakes, believe me. Like they said this not for the weak. LOL
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for me is when your client tell other people about my work. I do others thing to bring my business to forefront, I attend craft fairs and then I took it a little further by sponsoring one for my church this year to help small business in the church and surrounding area. I always try to support other small businesses, by spreading/giving people their information. I also post on social media (Facebook and Instagram). I finally found a wonderful lady name Kiah Rodgers who help me with my website, so hopeful that will bring new clients. I realize I cannot do it all by myself. I also have an Etsy page which carries my products. Now I have advertise more to really get this business rolling.
