We recently connected with Cynthia Flynn and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
This question popped out since it just happened earlier this year. I have two kids, a 1 year old and a 4 year old. We decided to go out to dinner, in Old Town Pasadena. There was a long wait for a table, so we played with our kids for about an hour while we were waiting for the table. We ran up and down the street with them, held them, spun them, really engaged with our kids. Our name was called, so we went inside the restaurant and sat down. We ordered, ate a delicious meal and then asked for the check. The server said, its already been taken care of and that we are really good parents. We looked around and asked, who took care of our bill, but the server just said they wished to remain anonymous and that we were really good parents. This was such a meaningful experience that it actually touched my heart.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We get referrals from other professionals on a daily basis. This has to do with two things 1) we do what we say we are going to do and 2) we give a lot of referrals out. One of the metrics I keep track of is how many referrals we are able to pass out and my goal on a weekly basis, is 20. If I can refer 20 people to professionals who are looking for help, on a weekly basis, I remain top of mind for the potential client and the referral source.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Two authors come to mind. Michael Gerber’s the E-Myth and then his industry specific follow up book, the E-Myth for Lawyers were two excellent books. The E-Myth taught me how to go from working in the business to on the business and the E-Myth for lawyers, was specific to my industry. Essentially, it was a guide on how to work on your business and grow it. The second author, Gino Wickman, wrote Traction – which is all about getting your team aligned, having level ten meetings, issue processing with your team for the growth of the company. Depending on where you are in your company, I’d recommend one or both authors!
